History[]
Zhou Zishu was a talented lantern-maker who was taken in by the Xiao family. He thus met and fell for Xiao Qing, and the two became engaged.
However, the servant Zhao Yi deeply desired Xiao Qing's affections for himself. Zhou Zishu witnessed him murder two members of the household, and attempted to apprehend him.
After Zhao Yi freed himself, he slaughtered the Xiao family and strangled Zhou Zishu in an attempt to force him to tell him the location of his manuscript. Zhou Zishu refused while Xiao Qing begged Zhao Yi to stop, and she lost her life as a result.
Zhou Zishu was transformed into a Puppet. Zhao Yi controls him into stealing the souls, flesh, and blood of the townspeople so that he could resurrect Xiao Qing.
Zhao Yi attempts to convince Wen Ning and Lan Sizhui that Zhou Zishu is a demonic cultivator who had massacred the family, rather than himself. Zhou Zishu's puppet is ultimately killed by Zhao Yi, who stages the scene to appear as if he had killed his living tormentor.[1]
