Yu Ziyuan (虞紫鸢, Yú Zǐyuān) was the wife of the former leader of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect, Jiang Fengmian, and the mother of Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli. She also went by the titles Madam Yu (虞夫人, Yú fūrén) and the Violet Spider (紫蜘蛛, Zǐ Zhīzhū).
Appearance
Yu Ziyuan was a beautiful woman with creamy skin and ferocity in her delicate features which were said to be as cold as jade. She was, like her son, a natural at sneering. She wore purple robes and a sword at her waist as well as an amethyst ring on her right index finger.[1]
Personality
Yu Ziyuan had a cold and assertive personality that did not come off as likeable in conversations. She was a formidable cultivator whose name alone could scare quite a few people away.[1] She was protective of her children.
History
Yu Ziyuan came from the prominent Meishan Yu Sect, where she was known as Third Lady Yu. She grew up with Madam Jin, Jin Guangshan's wife.[2] The two were sworn sisters and the dearest of friends, and even promised each other that if both of their children were sons, they'd become sworn brothers; if both were daughters, they'd become sworn sisters; if one was a son and one was a daughter, then of course they'd become husband and wife.[3]
She married Jiang Fengmian and moved to the Yunmeng Jiang Sect, but frequently went on night-hunts instead of staying in Lotus Pier. In addition, she lived in a different part of Lotus Pier than her husband and was always accompanied by Jinzhu and Yinzhu, the maids she brought with her when she left the Meishan Yu Sect.[1]

Jiang Fengmian
While the two were married, Yu Ziyuan had an extremely strained relationship with Jiang Fengmian. The cold relationship comes from Jiang Fengmian adopting Wei Wuxian and ignoring Jiang Cheng. Yu Ziyuan believed that this was because of Jiang Fengmian's lingering feelings for Wei Wuxian's mother.
Jiang Cheng
Yu Ziyuan genuinely loved her son. Her last moments were spent making sure that Jiang Cheng would survive the attack on Lotus Pier.
Jiang Yanli
Yu Ziyuan was very protective of Jiang Yanli, refusing to send her to the Wen sect for training. She arranged the marriage between Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan, though it fell through at first and the two fell in love on their own terms.
Wei Wuxian
Yu Ziyuan had a very poor relationship with Wei Wuxian, worse than her relationship with Jiang Fengmian. She viewed him as the cause of all the problems that befall her family. When Wen Lingjiao demanded him punished for his actions, Yu Ziyuan obliges, whipping him with Zidian. She does have some care for him as she refused to cut off his hand as Wen Lingjiao demanded. In her final moments, Yu Ziyuan told him to protect Jiang Cheng.
