Xue Yang (薛洋, Xuē Yáng), courtesy name Xue Chengmei (薛成美, Xuē Chéngměi) is a demonic cultivator and a former guest disciple of the Lanling Jin Clan.

Appearance[]

Xue Yang is described as a young man with a childish charm, looking nothing more than a boy. His canine teeth show when he smiles,[1] and, with bright eyes,[2] a high nose bridge, a radiant smile, and thin lips that have a soft red hue, he can almost be described as handsome.[2]

He is rather tall even as a junior disciple, and his eyes are filled with casual contempt.[3]

Personality[]

From the time of his youth, Xue Yang was known as a delinquent in Kuizhou, famous for his radiant smile, inhumane acts, and merciless personality.[4] This seems to have stemmed from a traumatic incident during his childhood, as before that he was naive and trusting.[5] By the time he is a junior disciple of the Lanling Jin Clan, however, Xue Yang views the cultivators around him with contempt and shows no fear in the presence of the intimidating Nie Mingjue.[6]

Xue Yang is a quick-witted, sharp, and intelligent young man who, aside from Wei Wuxian, is the only person who could restore the other half of the Yin Tiger Tally.[4]

He appears particularly sensitive to the notion that people look down on him, often reacting with murderous intent. He tends to hold grudges and takes revenge on an extreme and ruthless measure,[7][8] killing without discrimination for age or gender, and even taking advantage of Xiao Xingchen's blindness by using him to slaughter villagers as revenge against Xiao Xingchen.[8][7]

Xue Yang is extremely guarded, as he denies caring about anyone even during his final fight, despite significant evidence that he had grown to care about Xiao Xingchen.[9]

Trivia[]

  • Xue Yang's surname, 薛, is the top half of another character, 孽 (niè), which means sin, or evil. His courtesy name 薛成美 (Xuē Chéngměi) is derived from the proverb 成人之美 (chéng rén zhī měi) meaning 'help others do good deeds' and is usually used to describe the conduct of a gentleman.
  • Xiao Xingchen and Xue Yang were originally part of a different story altogether that author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu planned while she was in junior high.[10]
  • Xue Yang is mentioned to slice apples into the shape of rabbits.[5]
