Xue Chonghai (薛重亥, Xuē Chònghài), is a character exclusive to the Web Series.
Appearance[]
Xue Chonghai was a middle-aged man who dressed in cultivation robes. After he developed the Yin Metal, his eyes turned bright red.[1]
Personality[]
In his later years, Xue Chonghai was a power-hungry man who was willing to slaughter many people to grow the power of the Yin Metal.
By the time Wen Mao approached him, he also seemed to have been driven mad by his cultivation, as he laughed maniacally.[1]
History[]
In his early days, Xue Chonghai was a powerful grandmaster of cultivation.
For unknown reasons, after a hundred years he began to sacrifice people to grow resentful energy inside a special type of metal that could absorb spiritual energy, creating Yin Metal.
In order to increase the power of his Yin Metal, Xue Chonghai controlled the Xuanwu of Slaughter to eat the souls of many people, including cultivators. With the heavy resentful energy he obtained, he learned to snatch spirits to make living corpse puppets, and was thus the true inventor of Demonic Cultivation instead of Wei Wuxian.
He was of the same generation as Wen Mao and Lan An. The Five Great Clans joined forces and fought Xue Chonghai at the Yiling Burial Mounds, leading to the massive body count of the Burial Mounds. When Wen Mao finally apprehended him, Xue Chonghai laughed maniacally as he warned Wen Mao that he would end up much like him. He was soon executed.[1]
His shared last name with Xue Yang led Wei Wuxian to speculate that he may be his ancestor, though he had no proof.[2]
Trivia[]
- If Wei Wuxian had invented demonic cultivation, the web series risked censorship for gray morality. This is most likely why Xue Chonghai's character was added to the series.
