Wen Xu (温旭, Wēn Xù) is the eldest son of Wen Ruohan, the leader of the Qishan Wen Clan.

Appearance[]

His appearance is not described in the novel, though he presumably wears the same sun robes with flame crests as all high-ranking members of the Qishan Wen Clan.[1]

Personality[]

Wen Xu is ruthless enough to order his men to break Lan Wangji's leg during his attack on the Cloud Recesses, as well as injure Qingheng-Jun so severely that he dies several weeks later.[2][3]

History[]

Burning of the Cloud Recesses[]

Wen Xu accuses the Qingheng-Jun of wrongdoing and forces the Gusu Lan Clan to burn down the Cloud Recesses as punishment, under the guise of cleansing their home so that it can be "reborn from the firelight."[2]

The attack has long-lasting ramifications, as it is one of the key events leading up to the Sunshot Campaign. Lan Wangji's leg is broken when he refused to step aside.[2] Lan Xichen salvages several scrolls from their library and flees.[2] He is eventually rescued by Jin Guangyao.[4] Their father Qingheng-Jun, the clan leader of the Gusu Lan Clan, is severely injured[5] and succumbs to his injuries a few weeks later.[3]

Sunshot Campaign[]

Wen Xu eventually meets Nie Mingjue in battle at the Hejian front. Nie Mingjue decapitates Wen Xu and orders his corpse cut into pieces to frighten the Qishan Wen Clan's troops.[6][2]

Later, when Nie Mingjue is brought before Wen Ruohan, Wen Ruohan specifically refers to him as "the one who killed Wen Xu," implying he wishes to avenge his son's death.[7]

Relationships[]

Wen Ruohan[]

Wen Ruohan indicates a desire to avenge Wen Xu when he captures Nie Mingjue, implying he is angered by the loss of his son.[7]

Wen Chao[]

When Wen Chao receives news of his brother's demise, he becomes angry and irritable, implying some level of care.[8]

Abilities & Weapons[]

Like most members of the Qishan Wen Clan, Wen Xu presumably fights with a sword.[6]

Animation Divergence[]

The animation adds that Wen Xu has a suspicious nature. Upon suspecting Meng Yao of hiding Lan Xichen, he has him captured and beaten. Meng Yao refuses to admit to anything, and Wen Xu eventually releases him.[9]

Web Series Divergence[]

In the web series, Wen Xu ruthlessly slaughters the outer disciples of the Gusu Lan Clan, before killing those he captures one by one until they tell him how to access the cave other disciples had sheltered in. Su She eventually blurts out the information, prompting Lan Wangji to emerge and surrender the Yin Metal to save the other members of his clan.[10]

Wen Xu is killed at Qinghe, not Hejian.[11]
