Wen Ruohan (温若寒, Wēn Ruòhán) was the last clan leader of the Qishan Wen Clan.
Appearance[]
Wen Ruohan has the appearance of a man in his twenties despite having two grown sons, as his cultivation is strong enough to maintain his body at peak fitness.[1] He wears the sun robes of the Qishan Wen Clan with flames along the hem to signify his status.[2]
Personality[]
Wen Ruohan is known to have an unpredictable temper, laughing one minute and being hostile the next.[3]
He seems to have been paranoid, as he goes to great lengths to establish the Qishan Wen Clan as the only dominant clan in the cultivation world. Clans that defy his orders are labeled "rebellious" or "destructive," and subsequently wiped out. In the year before the Sunshot Campaign, he forbade any clan from competing with the Qishan Wen Clan in night-hunts.[4][5] Moreover, at the slightest disobedience, Wen Ruohan became so enraged he acted as though he were mad. He is even willing to endanger the life of a fellow clan leader after a mere suggestion that the clan leader might not think Wen Ruohan's saber was superior.[3]
Wen Ruohan is a sadist, collecting torture devices in his Inferno Palace to play with prisoners until they die. After his time undercover as Wen Ruohan's trusted servant, Jin Guangyao describes him as a man of "cruel character."[3]
History[]
Death of Clan Leader Nie[]
The rift between the Qishan Wen Clan and the Qinghe Nie Clan begins several years before the Sunshot Campaign, when Wen Ruohan is gifted a saber. Though many flatter him to his face, one cultivator suggests that the Clan Leader of Qinghe Nie will not find it impressive.[3]
Wen Ruohan then summons Clan Leader Nie to examine his own saber before slapping the blade a few times, to the puzzlement of Clan Leader Nie. However, when Clan Leader Nie uses his blade during a night-hunt a few days later, his saber shatters and he is severely injured by a horned beast in front of his son, Nie Mingjue. Clan Leader Nie dies of a qi deviation six months later.[3]
Before the Sunshot Campaign[]
Under Wen Ruohan's leadership, his eldest son Wen Xu burns down the Gusu Lan Clan's Cloud Recesses after a false accusation of wrongdoing. Moreover, the Qishan Wen Clan sends envoys to many clans in the cultivation world, demanding that they turn over twenty of their disciples to be properly trained by their superior methods, including at least one member of the clan's main family.[4]
After the training fails due to the disastrous night-hunt at Mount Muxi, Wen Ruohan attempts to expand his power by setting up supervisory offices in every city across the cultivation world.[5] This results in the massacre at Lotus Pier and the launch of the Sunshot Campaign against Wen Ruohan and the Qishan Wen Clan.[6]
Death[]
During the Sunshot Campaign, Jin Guangyao manages to join the Qishan Wen Clan and gain the trust of Wen Ruohan, while secretly funneling letters and maps to Lan Xichen, who gives the information to Nie Mingjue. However, at Yangquan, Nie Mingjue is captured and brought to Nightless City to stand before Wen Ruohan.[3]
Nie Mingjue kills many Wen cultivators in his attempt to fight Wen Ruohan. Wen Ruohan, in turn, laughs and appears unfazed by the bloodshed. He is even willing to kill his own servant when Nie Mingjue hurls the man before him. Wen Ruohan is then able to subdue Nie Mingjue with a single punch to his chest.[3]
Jin Guangyao intervenes, recommending that Wen Ruohan send Nie Mingjue to the Fire Palace for torture instead of allowing him a quick death. Wen Ruohan agrees, and while his back is still turned, Jin Guangyao kills him to save Nie Mingjue.[3]
Relationships[]
Wen Xu[]
Wen Ruohan entrusts his eldest son with the burning of the Cloud Recesses.[7] He later expresses a desire to attain vengeance against Nie Mingjue for killing his son, implying anger at his death.[3]
Wen Chao[]
When mutilated and hunted by Wei Wuxian, Wen Chao expresses a continued desire to reach his father, indicating some level of trust associated with him.[8]
Wen Zhuliu[]
Wen Zhuliu held great reverence for Wen Ruohan, to the extent that he would exchange his family name for Wen. When Wen Ruohan assigned him to be Wen Chao's personal guard, Wen Zhuliu obeys Wen Chao absolutely out of a desire to appease Wen Ruohan.[9] After Wei Wuxian's attack, Wen Zhuliu struggles to save Wen Chao despite the odds, claiming he owes Wen Ruohan a debt of generosity.[8]
Jin Guangyao[]
Unlike most servants who are required to walk on their knees in Wen Ruohan's presence, Jin Guangyao is able to stand upright and address Wen Ruohan directly, implying that Wen Ruohan views him quite favorably.[1]
Wen Qing[]
Wen Qing is the daughter of Wen Ruohan's cousin, with whom he shared a close relationship. She is a great favorite of Wen Ruohan's due to her exceptional talents in medicine and the liberal arts, and she often accompanies him to banquets.[2]
