Wen Mao (温卯, Wēn Mǎo) was the founder of the Qishan Wen Clan.
Personality[]
Wen Mao expressed an abhorrence of those who abused their power. In particular, he declared that "all those who oppress others and do evil relying on the power of their house should be killed. Not only that, they should be beheaded for tens of thousands to revile so that those to come would beware."[1]
History[]
Several hundred years before the novel's setting, Wen Mao rose to fame after defeating the Qiongqi, a divine beast of chaos, following a lengthy battle.[2] He then founded the Qishan Wen Clan and suggested changing from the school-based cultivation system to a bloodline-based system, allowing inheritance to pass from clan leaders to their children.[3][4]
Inspired by Wen Mao, cultivation clans connected by blood ties rose "as if they were bamboo shoots after a spring rain." Nearly every slightly-famous cultivator chose to found their own clan.[4]
Several hundred years after his death,[4] the Qishan Wen Clan forces cultivators from other clans to attend a training camp held by Wen Chao, the second son of their current leader Wen Ruohan. The cultivators are forced to read the Quintessence of the Wens, which includes quotes from Wen Mao.[1]
During the fight in cave of the Xuanwu of Slaughter, Wei Wuxian recites Wen Mao's quote on oppression to Wen Chao. Wen Chao fails to recognize his own ancestor's words.[1]
Web Series Divergence[]
In the Web Series, Wen Mao was one of many cultivators to join together to defeat Xue Chonghai, the master of the Xuanwu of Slaughter and founder of Demonic Cultivation.[5]
