A Waterborne Abyss (水行渊, Shuǐ Xíng Yuān) is a monster that consists of an entire body of water.

Description[]

Waterborne abysses can appear in both rivers and lakes. They are resemble large, dark whirlpools, capable of destroying boats and swallowing anyone who dares venture in their vicinity.

Waterborne abysses are are created by frequent drownings; eventually, the resentful energy of the Water Ghosts that result from drowned people causes the water itself to develop a personality.

The body of water will require living humans as sacrifices to keep it docile. If there are no sacrifices, the waterborne abyss stirs up its waters to drown people. This spawns many more water ghosts.

Waterborne abysses are notoriously difficult to exterminate. The only proven method involves draining all the water, digging up all the people and items sunk by the abyss, and leave the lakebed or riverbed exposed to sunlight for a number of years.[1]

History[]

A waterborne abyss appears in Biling Lake near Caiyi Town, a village by the Cloud Recesses, although no one has drowned there recently.

Lan Xichen takes several disciples to investigate, including Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, and Su She. The waterborne abyss claims Su She's sword and nearly his life. When Wei Wuxian attempts to rescue him, he too is nearly taken by the abyss before Lan Wangji rescues them both.

After their investigation, Lan Xichen concludes that the abyss had formed elsewhere and been chased downstream to Biling Lake. The Qishan Wen Clan had recently suffered reports of a waterborne abyss, and after failing to purge it, the Wen cultivators had simply driven it away for the Gusu Lan Clan to deal with.[1]

Animation Divergence[]

In the Animation, Jin Zixuan is also among the cultivators who investigate the waterborne abyss.[2]

Moreover, Wei Wuxian is pulled fully underwater by the waterborne abyss during the Animation. He then begins to draw in resentful energy to test his theories on Demonic Cultivation; Lan Wangji rescues him before he can complete his test.[2]
