A Water Ghost (水祟, Shuǐ Suì) is a resentful corpse that usually forms after a person drowns.

Description[]

Water Ghosts are described as having ashen, swollen faces. They dwell in water and are typically picky about their area, preferring to stay near the very places that they drown.[1]

Occurrence[]

The arrival of Water Ghosts in Caiyi Town is the first sign of the Waterborne Abyss driven downstream into Biling Lake. They seem to live within the waters of the abyss.[1][2]

Water Ghosts are also common in Yunmeng, where the Yunmeng Jiang Clan often exorcise the ghosts without asking for any compensation. Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng once encounter the small, timid water ghost of a boy no older than thirteen. It clings to the boat of an old man and eats his lotus seed pods. The old man refuses to allow the disciples to exorcise the ghost, claiming that it helps him with his boat.

Although Water Ghosts cannot usually taste anything, the ghost child had clearly drowned trying to eat lotus seed pods. After death, it gobbles up the pods in a fulfillment of its final wish.[3]
