The Stalk of Grass - Part Five is the thirty-seventh chapter of Mo Dao Zu Shi.
Synopsis []
Lan Jingyi notices that hundreds of Fierce Corpses fill the streets.
Wei Wuxian uses his own blood and the already-written Talismans carried by the juniors to animate all of the Paper Effigies to fight via the Final Eyes Summoning. Although he warns Wei Wuxian to be careful of potential backlash from Demonic Cultivation, Xiao Xingchen agrees that it was the best option they had available.
Wei Wuxian feeds Xiao Xingchen the rice congee, although he suspects it may be too late to save him from Corpse Poisoning. After thanking Wei Wuxian, Xiao Xingchen remarks that if he had to eat this food every day, he would choose death.
As the Paper Effigies defeat the corpses, Wei Wuxian and Xiao Xingchen notice a noise from the roof. A Fierce Corpse smashes through and stabs at Jin Ling, who deflects the attack with Suihua just in time. Lan Jingyi exclaims that he has never seen a corpse move so fast, but stops himself with the memory of Wen Ning.
Wei Wuxian attempts to control the corpse with his bamboo flute, to no avail, meaning that the corpse already has a master. He then commands the Paper Effigies to successfully capture the corpse.
Upon inspection, Wei Wuxian notices that this man, too, misses a tongue. Searching further, he finds two long Skull-Piercing Nails, but without knowing his identity, decides against removing them.
After learning that Lan Sizhui has studied Inquiry, and that Lan Wangji describes his qin language as "fine," Wei Wuxian asks him to play. They learn that the corpse is Song Lan, was killed by Xiao Xingchen, and that the one who controls him is "The one behind you."
Suddenly, "Xiao Xingchen" stands and snaps his fingers, and Song Lan easily disperses with the Yin Musclemen to take Wei Wuxian captive. Wei Wuxian orders Lan Sizhui to lead the juniors outside, and Lan Sizhui thinks to himself that with "Master Mo" and Lan Wangji around, he does not feel there is a need to be afraid.
"Xiao Xingchen" uses a red elixir to cure his Corpse Poisoning before revealing he knows Wei Wuxian's true identity due to his proficiency in Demonic Cultivation. He then pulls out a Spirit-Trapping Bag to request that Wei Wuxian restore a shattered soul.
Wei Wuxian refuses, believing the soul beyond repair. He then reveals the other's identity: not Xiao Xingchen, but Xue Yang. Xue Yang tosses off the bandages around his eyes, and he continues to insist that Wei Wuxian restore the soul, although Wei Wuxian maintains that he cannot.
Suddenly, Wen Ning arrives, having been summoned by Wei Wuxian while he played his bamboo flute. Wei Wuxian orders him to defeat Song Lan, but not to hurt him badly.
Wei Wuxian declares his confidence in Wen Ning, and Xue Yang laments that even with the Skull-Piercing Nails, "that thing" is disobedient. Wei Wuxian retorts that Wen Ning is not a thing, and Xue Yang seizes the opportunity to attack, taking advantage of Wei Wuxian's low spiritual power.
Xue Yang insists that he does not want to kill Wei Wuxian, just take him captive until he repairs the soul. As he announces that he set three-hundred Fierce Corpses upon Lan Wangji so that he will not be able to help, Lan Wangji descends from the sky.[1]
