The Morning Dew - Part Three is the thirtieth chapter of Mo Dao Zu Shi.
Synopsis []
Not long after the Siege of the Burial Mounds, Chang Ping went out night-hunting for two weeks with a few members of his clan. They returned to find the rest of their clan massacred: their protective array had been destroyed, and evil spirits purposefully led in.
Xiao Xingchen volunteered to find the culprit, eventually pinpointing Xue Yang, a former street child and delinquent from Kuizhou who apparently had a grudge against Chang Ping's father.
After apprehending Xue Yang, Xiao Xingchen brought him to a Discussion Conference at the Lanling Jin Clan's Golden Carp Tower. All clans agreed on severe punishment, with the exception of the Lanling Jin Clan.
Xue Yang had been a guest disciple for Jin Guangshan, who wished for him to reforge the half of the Yin Tiger Tally that Wei Wuxian had destroyed before his death.
Listening to Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian reflects that Xue Yang likely wanted not just revenge against Chang Ping's father, but to test the reforged Yin Tiger Tally on the Yueyang Chang Clan.
At any rate, Nie Mingjue heard of the situation and threatened to use Baxia to kill Xue Yang then and there. Despite his sworn brother Jin Guangyao's attempts to mediate, he was unyielding, and the Lanling Jin Clan could only give in.
However, they immediately commuted his sentence to life imprisonment, and Nie Mingjue died not long after of a qi deviation. As a result, the Lanling Jin Clan pressured Chang Ping into reneging his claims against Xue Yang, and he was freed again.
Xue Yang targeted Xiao Xingchen's closest friend, Song Lan, for revenge. He massacred Baixue Temple, the temple Song Lan was raised in, and blinded Song Lan's eyes.
Wei Wuxian wonders why Lan Wangji did not interfere, but then he recalls that his Discipline Whip scars likely left him bedridden for years. Despite his curiosity, he declines to ask about the scars, and listens to the rest.
Xiao Xingchen took Song Lan to Baoshan Sanren, and vanished shortly after. Song Lan, however, returned with full eyesight – because Xiao Xingchen had requested that his own eyes be transplanted into his friend.
Jin Guangshan died soon thereafter, and Jin Guangyao announced that things would be different from then on. As a result, he executed Xue Yang and set about restoring the Lanling Jin Clan's reputation. Song Lan, however, also disappeared after a few years.
Just then, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji arrive at the Chang Residence. At their presence, the buried clan members begin slamming on their graves. As they investigate, they notice a man removing a corpse from a dug grave.
The Gravedigger uses mist to cover his face and sword as he fights Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian notices that he seems extremely familiar with the moves of the Gusu Lan Clan.
As the Gravedigger pulls out a Transportation Talisman, Wei Wuxian uses Demonic Cultivation to remove the corpse from the Gravedigger's back before he escapes.
Examining the corpse, they find that while the limbs are fake, the torso is that of the Demonic Left Arm's body. Lan Wangji adds that he does not believe the Gravedigger is someone he knows well, and Wei Wuxian believes him.
Returning to the tavern, Lan Wangji finishes the story of the Yueyang Chang Clan. Several years after Xiao Xingchen's disappearance, Chang Ping's eyes were dug out before he was killed by lingchi, a torturous killing meant for punishment. His body bore markings from Shuanghua, the sword of Xiao Xingchen.
Although attempts were made to summon Xiao Xingchen's soul, nothing was found, meaning he either was not dead or his spirit had dissolved. Lan Wangji remains unsure that Xiao Xingchen was the culprit, and Wei Wuxian agrees.
Wei Wuxian then convinces Lan Wangji to drink with him, though he is surprised to hear that Lan Wangji has never tasted the Emperor's Smile hidden in the Jingshi. To his surprise, Lan Wangji falls asleep after one bowl.
Wei Wuxian seizes his chance to summon Wen Ning. Examining his friend, he discovers Skull-Piercing Nails that inhibit his consciousness. After removing the nails, he realizes that a sword will be required to remove Wen Ning's chains. He turns around, intending to venture back into the tavern for Bichen.
However, Lan Wangji is standing right behind him.[1]
