The Morning Dew - Part Two is the twenty-ninth chapter of Mo Dao Zu Shi.

Synopsis []

The waiter explains that several years after the massacre of the Yueyang Chang Clan, Chang Ping was killed by lingchi, death by slicing off flesh a little at a time. When Wei Wuxian asks who would have done such a thing, the waiter suggests one Wei Wuqian,* the Yiling Patriarch.

Wei Wuxian is flabbergasted, and Lan Wangji announces they are leaving. Before departing, the friendly waiter puts his arm around Wei Wuxian, only to notice Lan Wangji glaring at him as if Wei Wuxian were his wife.

Wei Wuxian then says that he is still standing after one bowl of wine, winning his bet with the waiter. Since he cannot give his true last name, he tells the man his surname is Lan.

Once outside, Lan Wangji explains that he now recalls the events in Yueyang, so they need not ask the waiter anymore. Although Wei Wuxian was not involved, the matter was indeed related to him by two distinct connections.

One of the persons involved, Xiao Xingchen, was a former student of Baoshan Sanren. Baoshan Sanren was the teacher of Wei Wuxian's mother, Cangse Sanren.

Wei Wuxian reflects that although Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan were supposedly close to his parents, Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze, they never spoke about them to him.

Baoshan Sanren, meanwhile, was from the same time as Wen Mao and Lan An. However, she refused to start her own clan and retreated into the mountains. She often took abandoned children up to her celestial mountain to be her pupils, under the condition that if they ever left, they were to sever all contact with her.

Only three ever left: Yanling Daoren, Cangse Sanren, and Xiao Xingchen, and none died a peaceful death.

Xiao Xingchen was only seventeen when he left the mountain in the hopes of saving the world, shortly after the Siege of the Burial Mounds. Despite recruitment by multiple clans, he refused to join, stating that he wanted to build a clan that did not rely on bloodline with his close friend. Although soft and gentle on the outside, he was determined and resolute on the inside, and people often sought him for help.

  • "Wuqian" means "no money," while "Wuxian" means "no envies."[1]
