The Elegant Flirt - Part Three is the thirteenth chapter of Mo Dao Zu Shi.

Synopsis []

As he lies atop Lan Wangji, unable to move, Wei Wuxian recalls the first time they met. When he and Jiang Cheng were fifteen, they came to the Cloud Recesses to study for three months.

Lan Qiren was widely regarded as an excellent teacher who produced excellent students. When invitations to study under his tutelage were sent to many clans, their parents were delighted. Wei Wuxian, the leading disciple of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan and the son of Clan Leader Jiang Fengmian's friend, and Jiang Cheng, the heir to the clan, are sent from the Yunmeng Jiang Clan.

Wei Wuxian, however, wonders if he is not already good enough, to which Jiang Cheng assures him that he will be the bane of Lan Qiren's teaching career.

Another youth inquires if Lotus Pier is more fun than the Cloud Recesses, and declares his desire to study there next. Nie Huaisang's excitement is cut short, however, with a reminder that his elder brother Nie Mingjue will break his legs if he does.

Nie Huaisang then advises Wei Wuxian to beware Lan Qiren's favorite pupil, who just so happens to be in charge of discipline: Lan Wangji.

To Nie Huaisang's amazement and Jiang Cheng's frustration, Wei Wuxian recounts how he ran afoul of Lan Wangji the night before, the very first night of their stay. He had snuck outside after curfew to obtain jars of Emperor's Smile, a renowned wine in Gusu. However, Lan Wangji caught him returning, and refused Wei Wuxian's attempts to convince him to let it go. They fought, and although one jar of wine broke, Wei Wuxian drank the second to avoid breaking more rules by bringing the jar inside the Cloud Recesses. Lan Wangji had never seen such a shameless person before in his life.

In the Laoshi, Lan Qiren reads all three-thousand rules aloud, noting that it is evident that some visitors did not read them. When he suspects Wei Wuxian is not paying attention, he rattles off a series of questions, all of which Wei Wuxian answers correctly.

Still not satisfied, Lan Qiren then asks Wei Wuxian a question regarding the proper way to handle an executioner's resentful ghost. As Wei Wuxian ponders his answer, Lan Qiren commands Lan Wangji to answer for him.[1]

Author's Note[]

Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's end-of-chapter note reads:[2]

In ancient times, men were bestowed their courtesy name when they were twenty, in a coming of age ceremony. However, this is an unscientific, un-researched and imaginative fictional xianxia world, don’t be too concerned about these things; I’ll bring the coming of age ceremony forward to the age of fifteen.
