The Elegant Flirt - Part One is the eleventh chapter of Mo Dao Zu Shi.

Synopsis []

Clinging to his donkey, Wei Wuxian cries loudly outside the Cloud Recesses, the residence of the Gusu Lan Clan. Since being taken by Lan Wangji, he has not had the chance to summon Wen Ning again, nor to learn why he is not ash or why he has lost his consciousness.

Wei Wuxian is aghast that over a thousand rules have been added to the Gusu Lan Clan's Wall of Discipline, as there are now over four thousand rules to follow. Lan Jingyi scolds him for crying, citing the rule that noise is prohibited, but Lan Wangji simply instructs the juniors to let him cry and then to drag him inside.

Lan Sizhui attempts to console him by explaining that Lan Wangji is simply protecting him. Jiang Cheng is known to take anyone who practices Demonic Cultivation back to Lotus Pier, and, according to Lan Jingyi, none of those taken are ever seen again.

Lan Wangji exits the Cloud Recesses accompanied by his brother Lan Xichen, the leader of the Gusu Lan Clan. As they have similar appearances, they are known as the Twin Jades of Lan. However, Lan Xichen is known for his warmth and friendliness, while Lan Wangji is aloof and stern.

Wei Wuxian attempts to speak nonsense to Lan Xichen, but Lan Wangji places a Silence Spell upon him. Lan Xichen explains that he is departing to plan the next Discussion Conference with his sworn brother Jin Guangyao, the Chief Cultivator and leader of the Lanling Jin Clan. Wei Wuxian notes that Jin Guangyao is also a bastard son of Jin Guangshan, and therefore a half-brother to Jin Zixuan and Mo Xuanyu.

Before leaving, Lan Xichen also mentions that their Uncle has examined the Demonic Left Arm from Mo Village. He then unlocks the Silence Spell from Wei Wuxian and chides his brother to treat his guest nicely, as it is not often that Lan Wangji brings home guests in such a good mood. Wei Wuxian is astonished that Lan Xichen can discern his dour brother to be in a good mood.

After his brother departs, Lan Wangji commands the juniors to drag Wei Wuxian to the Jingshi, his personal quarters in the Cloud Recesses.

After Lan Wangji leaves, Wei Wuxian explores outside, only to realize that without a Jade Token of passage, he will not be able to leave the Cloud Recesses due to its protective barrier. He re-enters the Jingshi and, examining an incense burner, notices a loose floorboard.

Wei Wuxian is stunned to find that the strict Lan Wangji keeps several jars of the wine Emperor's Smile in his quarters. He drinks two jars when he realizes that the Cold Spring in the rear of the Cloud Recesses offers him the perfect opportunity to steal a Jade Token, as people must take off their clothes before entering the water.

Wei Wuxian makes his way to the Cold Spring, and is delighted to see that there is indeed a man in the spring. However, he is shocked to see dozens of scars marring the man's back, scars of the Discipline Whip. Typically, only a few strikes are necessary, so for this man to be covered in scars, he must have done something truly terrible.

Suddenly, the man turns around, giving Wei Wuxian an even greater shock.[1]
