The Beguiling Boy - Part Four is the forty-ninth chapter of Mo Dao Zu Shi.
Synopsis []
Wei Wuxian finally determines that this scene must be Nie Mingjue's capture during a surprise attack at Yangquan. As a result, he and his fellow captives were taken directly to Wen Ruohan in Nightless City.
Meng Yao laughs with pity at Nie Mingjue's terrible situation. Another captive, however, insults the Scorching Sun Palace as "the den of Wen-dogs," and Meng Yao immediately kills him.
Infuriated, another captive tells Meng Yao to kill him as well, and Meng Yao obliges with a smile. He then asks if anyone else dare say the slur, and, knowing he will die anyway, Nie Mingjue growls, "Wen-dog."
Instead of killing him, however, Meng Yao presents Baxia to Nie Mingjue.
Meng Yao taunts him that Baxia is inferior to his father's saber. He wonders how many slaps it would take for Wen Ruohan to break it – a direct reference to the sabotaged saber that resulted in the death of Nie Mingjue's father, which Nie Mingjue witnessed as a teenager.
Nie Mingjue strikes Meng Yao, who retaliates by kicking him, to Wei Wuxian's amusement. When Nie Mingjue attempts to strike a killing blow, however, Wen Ruohan uses spiritual power to pull Nie Mingjue through the air towards him.
Nie Mingjue seizes Baxia and kills many of the Qishan Wen Clan's cultivators. During their brief fight, Wen Ruohan also kills his own cultivator who was thrown in his way.
Wen Ruohan laughs before he resoundingly defeats Nie Mingjue with a single punch to his chest that sends him sinking into the stone floor. Watching the scene, Wei Wuxian is astonished at Wen Ruohan's level of cultivation.
As Nie Mingjue lies helpless, Wen Ruohan inquires if he is the one who killed Wen Xu. Meng Yao affirms it before suggesting that Wen Ruohan send Nie Mingjue to the Inferno Palace for torture instead of killing him then and there.
Wen Ruohan tells Meng Yao to do as he wishes, and Meng Yao promptly assassinates Wen Ruohan with Hensheng as Nie Mingjue fades into unconsciousness.
Nie Mingjue awakens to find himself carried by Meng Yao, who has escaped Nightless City. Nie Mingjue grabs Baxia again, and attempts to kill Meng Yao for killing his fellow captives. Meng Yao pleads that he had no choice, given Wen Ruohan's character, but Nie Mingjue insists that he would not kill his men if he had been in his place.
When Meng Yao points out that Nie Mingjue would have died if he had not killed his men, Nie Mingjue declares that he will kill himself after Meng Yao. Just then, Lan Xichen arrives and places himself between Nie Mingjue and Meng Yao.
Lan Xichen reveals that the maps he had sent to Nie Mingjue were originally given to him by Meng Yao, who has been a spy rather than a turncoat. Meng Yao kneels and apologizes for referencing his father, acknowledging the pain he caused while insisting that he had no choice, given Wen Ruohan's sensitivity to insults. Nie Mingjue refuses to listen, despite Lan Xichen's support of Meng Yao.
However, he then strikes a boulder with Baxia rather than Meng Yao's head before storming away.
With Wen Ruohan dead, the Sunshot Campaign ends after a few more skirmishes. The Lanling Jin Clan holds a lavish Flower Banquet to celebrate at Golden Carp Tower, and Jin Guangshan acknowledges the now-famous Meng Yao as his son, Jin Guangyao.
Nie Mingjue approaches Jin Guangyao and expresses concern to see that Xue Yang, Kuizhou's infamous delinquent, has been recruited by the Lanling Jin Clan.
Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji arrive, followed by Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian. Nie Mingjue is stunned to hear that Wei Wuxian forgot his sword, which Lan Xichen finds amusing and Lan Wangji declares "frivolous" but "not out of the ordinary."
Lan Xichen then encourages his brother to speak with Wei Wuxian, but an argument breaks out between Wei Wuxian and Jin Zixuan after the latter apparently asked about Jiang Yanli. Jiang Cheng interrupts to mediate, and Wei Wuxian storms away. Watching the scene through Empathy, Wei Wuxian is embarrassed at his past behavior.
Although Nie Mingjue does not trust Jin Guangyao, he eventually agrees to become sworn brothers at Lan Xichen's request. As best Wei Wuxian can discern, Nie Mingjue worries that Jin Guangyao would follow a dark path without supervision, despite his genius. If Jin Guangyao were his younger brother, Nie Mingjue could discipline him as he does Nie Huaisang. Thus, the three swore an oath together to become the Venerated Triad.
In the Impure Realm, Lan Xichen plays Purification Tone to soothe Nie Mingjue's growing saber spirit. Jin Guangyao compliments his guqin skills, and Lan Xichen inquires if his mother taught him.
Jin Guangyao answers that she only taught him reading and writing, and spent all of their money on cultivation books to prepare him to meet his father. Unfortunately, the books were actually a scam.
Lan Xichen offers to teach him to play Purification Tone, typically a secret of the Gusu Lan Clan, so that he can play for Nie Mingjue.
Sometime later, Lan Xichen becomes busy rebuilding the Cloud Recesses, so Jin Guangyao begins to play the guqin for Nie Mingjue. He arrives to find Nie Mingjue frustrated with Nie Huaisang's lack of saber work. Nie Mingjue threatens to burn his art, but Jin Guangyao advises a gentler approach.
Nie Mingjue asks if he's discerned exactly where his brother's heart lies. Jin Guangyao says he has, and that Nie Mingjue is the only person he cannot read. Listening to the song, Wei Wuxian notes its effectiveness, as he is able to feel all of the hostile energy in Nie Mingjue suppressed.
At Golden Carp Tower, Lan Xichen notes that Jin Guangyao has been traveling to Qinghe every day to play for Nie Mingjue while Lan Xichen rebuilds the Cloud Recesses. He warns him that Nie Mingjue has reached a new milestone with Baxia, which will worsen his temperament more.
Nie Mingjue bursts in and privately confronts Jin Guangyao about the commuting of Xue Yang's sentence from death to life imprisonment. He accuses Jin Guangyao of interfering. When Jin Guangyao says that Xue Yang cannot hurt another person, Nie Mingjue accuses him of defending Xue Yang. Jin Guangyao then insists that the decision was Jin Guangshan's, and Nie Mingjue accuses him of hiding behind his father.
Nie Mingjue demands that he kill Xue Yang, insisting that his pitiful act does not work on him. Jin Guangyao replies that it is not an act, as he was not born with a high status, nor did he have a chance to develop a high level of cultivation, unlike Nie Mingjue. He mentions that his father has chosen to recognize another illegitimate son rather than consider him a successor, and freely admits that he fears losing his position in Lanling Jin Clan.
Angered, Jin Guangyao asks why, since Nie Mingjue has killed more people than him, yet he holds those he killed against him. Nie Mingjue answers that he killed in battle, not for societal gain.
Jin Guangyao retorts that if he killed "one to save a hundred," is that wrong? He accuses Nie Mingjue of claiming that those whom he has killed deserved it, and asks how he determines who deserves to die.
When Nie Mingjue, in response, asks Jin Guangyao considers his life more valuable than those he's killed, Jin Guangyao declares that he is obviously different.
Nie Mingjue kicks him down the stairs of Golden Carp Tower, and, drawing Baxia, shouts that he is the "son of a prostitute."
Lan Xichen intervenes, but Nie Mingjue insists that Jin Guangyao is beyond redemption, and must be killed. After sending Jin Guangyao away, Lan Xichen explains Jin Guangyao's angry behavior as the result of his circumstances: Madam Jin abuses him, and Jin Guangshan has refused to fund the watchtowers.
Jin Guangyao arrives at the Impure Realm the next day to find Nie Mingjue sparring with Nie Huaisang, who is more interested in the presents Jin Guangyao brought than his saber.
Infuriated, Nie Mingjue insists that even a pig would have learned before Nie Huaisang. He calls the guards to take Nie Huaisang's art from his room and burn them. Jin Guangyao attempts to persuade him, but Nie Mingjue does not listen, and Jin Guangyao holds the distraught Nie Huaisang back from being burned himself.
Nie Huaisang screams at Nie Mingjue that he will never learn before fleeing.[1]
