The Beguiling Boy - Part Three is the forty-eighth chapter of Mo Dao Zu Shi.

Synopsis []

Wei Wuxian notices a seal on Nie Mingjue's head that suppresses his resentful energy, and reflects that Nie Mingjue, who seemed invincible during the Sunshot Campaign, is kept here unable to even see light.

Across Golden Carp Tower, Lan Wangji watches Wei Wuxian's body with concern. He lightly touches Wei Wuxian's lips with his finger, but suddenly, Wei Wuxian's fists clench and his eyebrows draw together. Lan Wangji holds him in his arms.

Wei Wuxian's Paperman has been sucked into Empathy by the overwhelming resentful energy of Nie Mingjue's head.

He awakens to the smell of blood and observes Nie Mingjue sheath his saber, having just slain Wen Xu, the eldest son of Wen Ruohan at Hejian.

Nie Mingjue commands the head hung up for all to see, and Wei Wuxian recalls that Wen Xu's body was also ground into the earth. Suddenly, Nie Mingjue hears a noise from a house and storms in, only to see a terrified woman and her daughter. He assures the civilians that he will not harm them.

He inquires the identity of the man who cleaned up the battlefield last time, and after asking around, his subordinate says that the man is Meng Yao.

Wei Wuxian recalls that Jin Guangyao would still be known as Meng Yao, his mother's name at this point. His name was also an infamous joke among the cultivation world.

His father, Jin Guangshan, was widely known for his womanizing ways. Meanwhile, Meng Yao's mother was a famous prostitute, said to be talented in the guqin and calligraphy, and literate enough to nearly pass for the young mistress of a wealthy family. Jin Guangshan naturally sought her out when he visited Yunmeng, spending days with her and leaving a pearl as a keepsake.

Of course, he forgot her as soon as he left. Unlike Mo Xuanyu and his mother, whom Jin Guangshan remembered, Meng Yao and his mother were not as lucky. His mother, however, taught Meng Yao with care, preparing him for his future entrance to the cultivation world. Yet, when he grew past the age of ten, his mother became gravely ill and passed away.

Meng Yao left Yunmeng with his mother's keepsake pearl to arrive in Lanling. At Golden Carp Tower, he took out the keepsake and asked for the clan leader to be notified. Unbeknownst to him, the pearl button was hardly the rare treasure his father had pretended it was.

Unfortunately, Meng Yao had also arrived on the birthday of his brother Jin Zixuan. Sensing the hot-tempered Madam Jin's rage, Jin Guangshan ground the pearl button to pieces and commanded Meng Yao chased away so that his family would not encounter him when they ventured outside for the auspicious lantern lighting.

And so, Meng Yao was kicked down the many steps of Golden Carp Tower. He rolled down the steps, all the way from the top to the bottom. He has been a joke to the cultivation world ever since.

In Hejian, however, Nie Mingjue seeks Meng Yao out for his efforts cleaning up the battlefield.

Finding him outside a cave, away from the others, Nie Mingjue overhears many members of the Qinghe Nie Clan mocking Meng Yao's past. Infuriated at their mockery, Nie Mingjue chastises the men and encourages Meng Yao.

Nie Mingjue states that with practice, Meng Yao will develop more solid sword work, but Wei Wuxian notes that Meng Yao has started too late to develop any skills with depth. His only hope is to know a wide variety of skills.

Eventually, as Nie Mingjue is continually impressed with Meng Yao's conduct looking after the civilians displaced by the war, he appoints Meng Yao his deputy.

One day, Lan Xichen arrives in Hejian. Wei Wuxian recalls that there are many tales of the Venerated Triad. The ones of Nie Mingjue were about how he swept over all obstacles, leaving not even a trace of the Wen-dogs after he finished. Lan Xichen, however, first helped his uncle Lan Qiren defend Gusu. After Gusu settled down, Lan Xichen often travelled to aid others, saving many lives. Countless times, he helped recover lost territory and assisted narrow escapes. When people heard his name, they viewed him as a ray of hope, a powerful trump card.

During their meeting, Meng Yao pours tea for everyone, but no cultivators drink it, thinking him unclean as a prostitute's son. Lan Xichen, however, not only thanks Meng Yao, but sips the tea before he even begins to talk.

Lan Xichen declares that he will only stay one night, as he must go to Jiangling to assist Lan Wangji. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian have recently retaken Jiangling from the Wens, but Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian continue to quarrel.

Other cultivators claim that Lan Wangji denounced Wei Wuxian to his face, believing Wei Wuxian's cultivation unnatural and too focused on killing, while others maintain that as long as Wei Wuxian kills the Wens, they do not care what methods he uses. Wei Wuxian, meanwhile, reflects that although he and Lan Wangji did argue, their relationship was not nearly as bad as rumored.

Nie Mingjue hands Nie Huaisang's saber to Lan Xichen, requesting that he deliver it for his brother to practice whenever he visits Gusu again.

Later that evening, Nie Mingjue overhears Meng Yao's conversation with Lan Xichen, who says that Jin Guangshan is recruiting people to help in Langya. While he acknowledges his dream of earning his father's approval, Meng Yao insists that he cannot leave Hejian.

To Meng Yao's astonishment and gratitude, Nie Mingjue enters and announces that he will send Meng Yao to Langya with a letter of recommendation. Although Nie Mingjue then inquires how they knew each other, Lan Xichen and Meng Yao decline to tell him, as Lan Xichen calls it "the shame of a lifetime." The three talk late into the night as friends.

Unfortunately, Nie Mingjue's new deputy is not nearly as talented as Meng Yao, vexing the impatient Nie Mingjue.

Sometime later, Nie Mingjue is then summoned to Langya, which is on the verge of collapse. After the scene calms, he inquires after Meng Yao, but Jin Guangshan feigns ignorance.

Certain that Meng Yao is cleaning up the battlefield again, Nie Mingjue ventures onto the battlefield to search for him. Traveling to the eastern side of the forest, he observes with shock Meng Yao using a technique of the Qishan Wen Clan to slay a member of the Lanling Jin Clan.

Meng Yao pleads that the man tormented him, and continually stole credit so that he could never climb in rank and gain his father's approval. The man also insulted Meng Yao's mother.

Nie Mingjue accuses him of lying, citing his calm expression during the murder. Furthermore, he accuses Meng Yao of purposefully pretending to be pitiful the day they met, and asks if he would have killed every gossiper in the cave if he had not intervened.

Despite his fury, Nie Mingjue declares that he will do nothing to him. He insists that Meng Yao turn himself in, claiming that if the murder truly happened as he told it, he will not be punished severely. Meng Yao insists that he will be killed anyways, as his father has refused to so much as see him, but eventually he pretends to agree.

Instead, Meng Yao feigns suicide by stabbing himself in the abdomen. As the horrified Nie Mingjue catches him, he seizes the opportunity to freeze Nie Mingjue's qi and flee.

Nie Mingjue tells no one save Lan Xichen, who insists that there must be another explanation. Nie Mingjue refuses to believe so, and threatens to kill Meng Yao with Baxia should he ever see him again. However, years pass and he does not see him again.

In Empathy, Wei Wuxian realizes that Nie Mingjue rarely opens up to others. To have opened up to Meng Yao, and then to find out that Meng Yao is not who he thought he was, is extremely distressing to Nie Mingjue.

Suddenly, Wei Wuxian suffers the unbearable pain Nie Mingjue feels from many injuries. He is thrown before Wen Ruohan, and suddenly, a servant enters on his feet and not his knees, unlike the other Wen servants.

Nie Mingjue is incensed when the servant reveals himself as none other than Meng Yao.[1]
