Supreme Courage - Part Five is the fifty-fifth chapter of Mo Dao Zu Shi.

Synopsis []

Lan Wangji explains that the Xuanwu of Slaughter had been estimated to have devoured about five thousand people alive. Wei Wuxian speculates that the beast might still be digesting several hundred years later.

Wei Wuxian knows that if they wait more than a few days, their strength will drop due to a lack of food. He reasons that as Gusu is closer than Yunmeng, the Gusu Lan Clan will arrive to save them first.

Lan Wangji says they will not. In a monotone voice, he admits that his brother Lan Xichen is missing, and that his father is dying. To Wei Wuxian's astonishment, the stoic Lan Wangji begins to cry.

Wei Wuxian does not know how to respond, but after a while, he announces that their clothes are dry, and gives Lan Wangji the undergarments to wear.

After three days of carefully searching the underground pool, they cannot find the hole that Jiang Cheng mentioned. Wei Wuxian suspects that the Xuanwu's body is covering their escape, so they decide to kill the Xuanwu.

Knowing that their recovery and physical abilities will diminish with every new day, they collect as many rods, bows, and arrows as they can.

Lan Wangji removes a bow string to use his clan's infamous Chord Assassination on the Xuanwu. Originally developed by Lan Yi, the granddaughter of Lan An and the only female leader of the Gusu Lan Clan, the ability is one of their most powerful fighting techniques.

Wei Wuxian decides to enter the Xuanwu's shell and force it outside, where Chord Assassination will be most effective.

Slipping inside, he finds himself wading through corpse sludge that rises to his waist. However, his rods catch on something, and he is hopeful to see a rusted sword.

As soon as he grabs the sword, however, screams erupt in his ears. Wei Wuxian is stunned by its immense resentful energy, and feels as if hundreds of thousands of people are desperately wailing their lungs out.

Suddenly, the Xuanwu awakens. Wei Wuxian stuffs iron rods into its mouth and stabs its flesh with bundles of arrows.

Still, Wei Wuxian is nearly swallowed, and only manages to avoid it by clinging to the horrifying iron sword stuck in the beast's mouth.

The Xuanwu leaves its shell, and after six hours, Lan Wangji finally decapitates it.

After he fishes Wei Wuxian out of its jaws, he notices that Wei Wuxian is acting strangely. Lan Wangji takes him underwater to look for the hole, but they cannot find it. They realize with horror that the Xuanwu's thrashing likely disturbed enough rocks to block their exit.

As they return to shore, Wei Wuxian asks if Lan Wangji managed to recover the iron sword. Lan Wangji did not, and Wei Wuxian declines to tell him why he wishes to examine this special sword that has absorbed resentment from at least five-thousand people for at least four-hundred years.

Lan Wangji notes that Wei Wuxian has developed a fever. Near delirium, Wei Wuxian asks to use Lan Wangji's lap as a pillow. Although Lan Wangji initially refuses, Wei Wuxian awakens on his lap, but when he later awakens on a pillow of leaves, he assumes he only dreamt of lying on Lan Wangji's lap.

He asks Lan Wangji to talk, and Lan Wangji asks when he sleeps, only to scold Wei Wuxian when he admits he does not sleep before one in the morning.

Wei Wuxian asks Lan Wangji to sing for him, and is surprised when he does. He asks the name of the song, but does not catch the name that Lan Wangji murmurs.[1]
