Supreme Courage - Part Three is the fifty-third chapter of Mo Dao Zu Shi.
Synopsis []
The islet glides towards shore, and only Lan Wangji, Jin Zixuan, Jiang Cheng, and Wen Zhuliu refuse to retreat. Wei Wuxian remains still atop its back.
The creature raises its head, and Wei Wuxian realizes that while its back resembles a tortoise, its head resembles a snake. Its shell alone could fill Lotus Pier's entire martial arts field.
Wen Chao panics, alerting the tortoise to his presence as he flails about screaming for Wen Zhuliu's help. Wen Wuxian takes him to another islet, but Jiang Cheng warns that Wen Zhuliu is approaching. Wei Wuxian narrowly escapes the unusually forceful and dark power stemming from his hands, and Wen Zhuliu rescues Wen Chao.
Though the disciples rain arrows upon the Tortoise, none are able to penetrate its shell. Wei Wuxian snatches a bow from a shaking Wen archer, only to hear a scream behind him.
Wang Lingjiao has ordered two servants to hold Mianmian in place while a third servant aims the Branding Iron at her face.
Wei Wuxian immediately shoots the three servants with arrows, but Wang Lingjiao snatches the Branding Iron and aims again at Mianmian herself. Wei Wuxian throws himself in the way, knocking her back, but not before the iron brands his chest.
Enraged, Jiang Cheng attempts to strike Wang Lingjiao, but Wen Chao shouts for Wen Zhuliu to rescue her first. Although Jiang Cheng chases him, the Wens mount their swords and fly out of the caves.
Jin Zixuan shouts for everyone to follow, but the Wens cut the vines needed for the sword-less disciples to climb out, before blocking the entrance.
The disciples realize that their parents cannot rescue them, as they believe them to still be in Qishan. Wei Wuxian jokes that he has cooked meat for food, and Jiang Cheng threatens to sew his lips together.
Mianmian bursts into tears, apologizing over and over. Wei Wuxian insists that he was hurt, and teases that she should comfort him instead.
Lan Wangji then declares that there is a second exit, as there were no maple trees by the entrance, yet the surface of the pool has ample maple leaves.
As the Yunmeng Jiang Clan disciples are adept swimmers, Wei Wuxian uses a torch to distract the Tortoise while Jiang Cheng searches for the exit. When the Tortoise approaches his brother, he bites his finger, draws something illegible on his palm with blood, and slaps his palm on the ground to ignite a fire as tall as a person.
Jiang Cheng emerges from the water and announces that there is a hole large enough for six people to pass through at a time. While he helps those who cannot swim through the passage, Wei Wuxian continues to distract the Tortoise.
Suddenly, Wei Wuxian is shot with an arrow. The disciple who had tried to pull Mianmian out aimed for the Tortoise to make up for his earlier failure, yet accidentally hit Wei Wuxian instead.
Wei Wuxian pulls the arrow out of his arm, but the Tortoise is alerted by the scent of blood. Lan Wangji shoves Wei Wuxian out of the way, and the Tortoise bites down on Lan Wangji's leg instead.
The Tortoise attempts to drag Lan Wangji inside its shell to devour him. Wei Wuxian springs forward and seizes its jaws, prying them open to save Lan Wangji. He drags the bleeding Lan Wangji out of the pool and away from the beast... and their exit.[1]
