Soft - Part Four is the sixty-sixth chapter of Mo Dao Zu Shi.

Synopsis []

After they leave the Cloud Recesses, Wei Wuxian feigns pain from his wound, although it has already healed. As he sits on Little Apple, he requests that Lan Wangji grab the reins of the donkey to act out one of his few childhood memories.

In the memory, his solemn father carries Wei Wuxian on his shoulders, while his laughing mother rides a donkey. Wei Wuxian reflects that all he and Lan Wangji need is a child to complete the memory.

Wei Wuxian begins to play a tune on his bamboo flute, and Lan Wangji hesitates. He suddenly recalls that the tune he played on Dafan Mountain is the same tune Lan Wangji sang for him in the cave of the Xuanwu of Slaughter.

Wei Wuxian asks who composed it, and Lan Wangji answers that he himself did. No one else had heard it, so he was able to discern Wei Wuxian's identity from the song he played.

Wei Wuxian attempts to guess the song's name, but Lan Wangji simply asks him what he thinks its name is. Wei Wuxian then suggests over eighty names, all of which Lan Wangji rejects.

After a day, Wei Wuxian grows tired and thirsty. The two enter a farmhouse to find no one home. As Lan Wangji is about leave money to pay for the melons they wish to eat, the young couple who own the house return. Wei Wuxian instinctively pulls Lan Wangji down to hide with him among the hay.

The wife prepares dinner while the husband cuddles their young son, A-Bao. after hearing the wife refer to the husband as "Er-Gege," Wei Wuxian begins to teasingly call LAn Wangji "Lan Er-Gege." Lan Wangji warns him that if he does not stop, he will be silenced.

The couple argue over A-Bao; the wife fears he bullies another boy, but the husband maintains that he just does it because he likes the other boy and wants his attention.

The wife adds that she is worried, as rumors spread that the Yiling Patriarch has returned. Apparently, Wei Wuxian has become a common mythical person to threaten disobedient children: “If you don’t be obedient the Yiling Patriarch will return to find you and take you back to feed his ghouls." Both the wife and the husband are shocked to learn that such a person actually existed.

Wei Wuxian reflects that he really did dig up graves during the Sunshot Campaign. In fact, he overturned all of the cemeteries of the Qishan Wen Clan’s ancestors and turned all of the corpses into Fierce Corpses. In addition, for every member of the Wen Clan he killed, he turned them into fierce corpses as well before controlling them to kill their friends and family.

During the Sunshot Campaign, all of these things were praised, but later, his actions became more and more feared. Reflecting on this, Wei Wuxian cannot help but think he had gone too far.[1]
