Soft - Part Two is the sixty-fourth chapter of Mo Dao Zu Shi.

Synopsis []

Wei Wuxian realizes that a page has been carefully removed from the book, Collection of Spirit Turmoil. Lan Xichen explains that Collection of Spirit Turmoil is a book of malevolent songs from Dongying. When played with spiritual energy, the melodies can harm and even kill people.

Wei Wuxian reasons that Jin Guangyao blended Purification Tone with Collection of Spirit Turmoil, administering it as a slow poison to provoke Nie Mingjue's qi deviation.

Lan Xichen protests that he never told his sworn brother of the Room of Forbidden Books, but Wei Wuxian points out that Jin Guangyao was an excellent spy in Nightless City. The Cloud Recesses would not pose an obstacle for him.

In distress, Lan Xichen says that he will try the music out on himself, to Lan Wangji's alarm.

The three depart the Library Pavilion, and Lan Wangji decides to visit the recovering Lan Qiren while Lan Xichen returns Wei Wuxian to his cottage.

To Wei Wuxian's shock, Lan Xichen explains that the cottage was once his mother Madam Lan's place of imprisonment.

Wei Wuxian knows that their father Qingheng-Jun was an esteemed cultivator until he turned twenty, after which he went into secluded meditation.

According to Lan Xichen, the issue began when Qingheng-Jun fell for their mother, who did not return his affections. However, she killed a teacher of Qingheng-Jun, and despite his anguish, he married her to save her life.

As a result, she was imprisoned in the Cloud Recesses, and Qingheng-Jun stayed in secluded meditation to repent. Lan Qiren took care of the Gusu Lan Clan single-handedly, and raised Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji strictly in the hopes that they would not repeat their father's errors.

They were only permitted to see their mother once a month, though both looked forward to it. Their mother died when Lan Wangji was only six, and he did not understand what "gone" meant. He stubbornly continued to visit her cottage despite scoldings from their uncle. Even after he understood, he continued to visit.

Lan Xichen remembers Madam Lan as a gentle woman, and openly admits that he does not wish to know why she killed his father's teacher.

After Lan Xichen finishes his story, he plays a song on Liebing, breaking the rule against music at night in the Cloud Recesses.

Wei Wuxian promises to tell no one, and Lan Xichen assures him that he assumes Lan Wangji hides nothing from him anyways. He is surprised when Wei Wuxian says he will not ask Lan Wangji questions he does not wish to answer, insisting that with his brother, Wei Wuxian must ask if he wants to know.

Suddenly, Wei Wuxian's light up at Lan Wangji approaches with two jars of Emperor's Smile in hand.[1]
