The Silence Spell (禁言术, Jīnyán Shù) is a technique exclusive to the Gusu Lan Clan. It is primarily used as a minor disciplinary measure, enforcing silence upon its victims.
Description[]
The Silence Spell is typically used to discipline those who offend with their words. Once cast, the victim's lower and upper lips become inseparable, so that they cannot speak a single word. Its effects wear off after about half an hour, but it can also be removed by another member of the Lan Clan, or broken by force.[1]
Breaking the spell by force results in the person's lips being ripped bloody, as well as a hoarse throat for several days. [1]

In their youth, Lan Wangji once silences Wei Wuxian in the Library Pavilion of the Cloud Recesses when Wei Wuxian attempts to engage him in continual chatter.[2]
After Wei Wuxian's resurrection in the body of Mo Xuanyu, Lan Wangji casts the silence spell on Jin Ling for his rudeness to Lan Sizhui during the night hunt on Dafan Mountain.[1]
Lan Wangji uses the spell once again to prevent Wei Wuxian from babbling nonsense to Lan Xichen as Wei Wuxian was forcefully dragged into the Cloud Recesses.[3]
During the Second Siege of the Burial Mounds, Lan Wangji silences Su She when the latter continues to antagonize Wei Wuxian.[4] Wei Wuxian, in turn, notes that Lan Qiren can remove the spell himself, but he declines to do so. After Lan Jingyi informs Wei Wuxian on the exact nature of the conflict between Su She's Moling Su Clan and the Gusu Lan Clan, the outraged Su She breaks the spell by force. As a result, his raspy voice sounds as if it is "ten years older." [5]
At the Guanyin Temple, Lan Xichen silences Jin Guangyao, knowing that words are his greatest weapon. However, when Nie Huaisang then tricks Lan Xichen into stabbing his sworn brother, Jin Guangyao is so shocked that he breaks the spell by force.[6]
