The unnamed Second Lady Mo was the mother of Mo Xuanyu and a former lover of Jin Guangshan. She was the paternal half-sister of Madam Mo, the sister-in-law of Master Mo, and the maternal aunt of Mo Ziyuan.
Personality[]
Not much is known about Second Lady Mo. She was proud of her son and hoped he would achieve greatness as a cultivator.[1]
Like many characters in the novel, she seems to have been motivated by the suffering she endured for being born the child of a servant.[1]
Since she seems to have been a favored mistress of Jin Guangshan's,[2] it is likely that she was his preferred type of woman: beautiful, submissive, and uneducated.[3]
History[]
Second Lady Mo was born as the second daughter of the village leader. Unlike her sister Madam Mo, the Second Lady of Mo was the daughter of a slave, rather than their father's principal wife.[1]
The Mo family wanted to marry her off quickly, but at the age of sixteen, Second Lady Mo encountered Jin Guangshan when he passed through Mo Village. He seduced her and provided the Mo family with plenty of gifts and aid. As a result, the entire village began to envy the Second Lady of Mo.[1]
She bore Jin Guangshan one son, Mo Xuanyu. However, the promiscuous Jin Guangshan eventually grew tired of her and ceased visiting after Mo Xuanyu turned four.[1]
Gradually, Mo Village again began to disdain Second Lady Mo. She, in turn, refused to believe that Jin Guangshan would simply abandon his son.[1]
When Mo Xuanyu turned fourteen, she was proven correct, as Jin Guangshan accepted his son into Lanling Jin Clan.[1]
Second Lady Mo was very proud of her son, informing everyone that he would most certainly become an immortal and bring glory on his ancestors. Unfortunately, Mo Xuanyu was soon driven out of the clan for harassing his half-brother Jin Guangyao. On top of that, he seemed to have suffered a mental breakdown.[1]
Second Lady Mo was not able to withstand her son's disgrace and "choked to death" shortly thereafter as a result.[1] Her sister, by then the leader of Mo Village, abused Mo Xuanyu terribly after her death.[1][4]
