Synopsis[]

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji discuss their suspicions that whomever sent the Demonic Left Arm into Mo Village is a different person than the person who originally buried the legs in Qinghe.

In Yueyang, Wei Wuxian persuades Lan Wangji to stop at a tavern to drink and discover what the waiters know. The waiter tells them the story of how most of the Yueyang Chang Clan was massacred over ten years ago, and the survivors, including their leader Chang Ping, was killed by lingshi several years later.

During the waiter's explanation, Lan Wangji displays jealousy over the waiter's friendliness with Wei Wuxian, and stands to leave. Before Wei Wuxian follows, he notes that he has kept his wager to remain standing after one bowl of wine. The waiter says he will take his surname as a result, and Wei Wuxian tells him that his surname is "Lan."

Outside, Lan Wangji explains that he remembers the events now. It began with the arrival of Xiao Xingchen, a disciple of the same Baoshan Sanren who taught Wei Wuxian's mother, in the cultivation society. Xiao Xingchen was known for his benevolence, as he was always willing to help those in need.

Xue Yang was a delinquent from Kuizhou, taken in by the Lanling Jin Clan to study Demonic Cultivation and reforge the half of the Yin Tiger Tally that Wei Wuxian destroyed before his death. It was most likely that Xue Yang tested the reforged seal on the Yueyang Chang Clan, due to the an apparent grudge he bore against Chang Ping's father.

Xiao Xingchen volunteered to find the culprit, and succeeded in apprehending Xue Yang. He took him to a Discussion Conference at Golden Carp Tower and demanded punishment. All agreed except the Lanling Jin Clan, until Nie Mingjue pulled his saber Baxia and threatened to kill him right then and there.

The Lanling Jin Clan gave in, but Nie Mingjue died not long after, and after enough pressure, Chang Ping declared that the massacre had nothing to do with Xue Yang, and he was freed.

In revenge, Xue Yang targeted Song Lan, Xiao Xingchen's closest friend. He massacred Baixue Temple and blinded Song Lan, leaving no evidence behind. Xiao Xingchen could only take Song Lan to Baoshan Sanren and request that his eyes be given to Song Lan to restore his sight. He vanished not long after.

Wei Wuxian wonders silently why Lan Wangji did not intervene, only to remember the Discipline Whip scars likely rendered him bedridden for years.

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji approach the residence of the Yueyang Chang Clan. Suddenly, the graves begin to create noise once again. When Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji investigate, they encounter a Gravedigger who uses a spell to shroud his sword and face. As the gravedigger seems extremely familiar with Lan Wangji's moves. Wei Wuxian uses Demonic Cultivation to disturb the corpses until the the gravedigger flees. They then discover that he was digging for the torso of the Demonic Left Arm's corpse.

Lan Wangji finishes the story: several years after the incident, Chang Ping and the rest of the Yueyang Chang Clan were killed by lingshi with Shuanghua, the sword of Xiao Xingchen.

Back at the tavern, Wei Wuxian invites Lan Wangji to drink with him, only to discover that Lan Wangji falls asleep after one bowl. He seizes his chance to venture outside and summon Wen Ning. Examining his head, he removes Skull-Piercing Nails to revive his consciousness, but realizes that he will need Bichen to remove the chains.

Lan Wangji suddenly appears behind him.[1]
