Sandu: The Three Poisons - Part One is the fifty-sixth chapter of Mo Dao Zu Shi. The literal translation of the title is "Sandu" or "Three Poisons," which is both the name of Jiang Cheng's sword and his future title, Sandu Shengshou.
Synopsis []
Wei Wuxian passes out before hearing the name of the song.
He awakens in his own room at Lotus Pier. Jiang Yanli sits by his bedside, and Jiang Cheng promptly enters with the soup that Jiang Yanli has prepared.
Jiang Cheng informs him that it took five days to reach Yunmeng from Mount Muxi on foot, and another two to return and unblock the cave while evading the Wens.
Wei Wuxian devours the soup, though he expresses concern when Jiang Cheng confirms that Lan Wangji has returned to Gusu.
Jiang Fengmian enters, and Wei Wuxian learns that the Qishan Wen Clan has been too busy celebrating Wen Chao's triumph over the Xuanwu of Slaughter to return their swords.
Aghast, he insists that Lan Wangji killed it, but Jiang Fengmian replies that Lan Wangji said that Wei Wuxian killed it. After Wei Wuxian tells them the entire story, Jiang Cheng concludes that they both killed it, and should both receive credit.
Wei Wuxian senses envy from his shidi, and attempts to cheer him up by saying he wishes Jiang Cheng had been in the cave with him instead of the taciturn Lan Wangji. Jiang Cheng retorts that boredom served him right, as he should not have intervened in the fight.
Jiang Fengmian cuts his son off, and asks if he knows what is wrong. He insists that if Jiang Cheng feels otherwise, Jiang Cheng must not truly understand the motto of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan.
Yu Ziyuan bursts in, asking why it matters, since Wei Ying understands the motto. She accuses Wei Wuxian of bringing great trouble to their clan, insisting that Wen Chao could not actually dare hurt Lan Wangji and Jin Zixuan.
She then places Jiang Cheng between herself and Jiang Fengmian, demanding to know if Jiang Fengmian remembers that Jiang Cheng is his son. She accuses Jiang Fengmian of favoring Wei Wuxian, and adds that, due to his favoritism, outsiders gossip that Wei Wuxian is actually the son of Jiang Fengmian and Cangse Sanren.
Jiang Fengmian shouts her name, and the two depart, arguing bitterly.
Jiang Cheng storms away, and Wei Wuxian hastily follows despite his weakened state. He insists that Jiang Fengmian is just stricter towards Jiang Cheng because he is his own son, but when Jiang Cheng retorts that his father simply does not like him because of his mother, Wei Wuxian finds his statement difficult to refute.
Jiang Fengmian and Cangse Sanren night-hunted together often, and everyone expected her to become the next mistress of Lotus Pier. When the Meishan Yu Clan made an offer of marriage, Jiang Fengmian refused the pressure from both the clan and his own father, as he did not like Yu Ziyuan's character.
However, Cangse Sanren then eloped with Wei Changze, a servant of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan. Jiang Fengmian gave in to a marriage Yu Ziyuan, and their marriage has been unhappy for a long time.
Jiang Cheng bursts out that he is not like the past leaders of their clan, who were unrestrained and honest. He adds that while Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji killed the Xuanwu, he suffered days on foot to rescue them, yet has received no praise or recognition.
Wei Wuxian breaks in, insisting that no two clan leaders must be the same. After all, even the Gusu Lan Clan had Lan Yi. He vows that in the future, just as the Gusu Lan Clan has the Two Jades, so he and Jiang Cheng will be the Two Prides. In the future, Jiang Cheng will be clan leader, and Wei Wuxian will be at his side as his right-hand man. If anyone calls Jiang Cheng unfit, Wei Wuxian will beat them up.
Jiang Cheng teases him that he is too weak to beat anyone up right now.
Wei Wuxian takes the opportunity to ask what happened to Mianmian's satchel, but Jiang Cheng says he has not seen it. He then warns Wei Wuxian not to pursue her, as she seems like the lowly daughter of a servant.
Wei Wuxian reminds Jiang Cheng that he, too, is the son of a servant, but Jiang Cheng insists that he is different.
Wei Wuxian then asks how the Gusu Lan Clan is. Jiang Cheng says that Lan Xichen remains missing, Lan Qiren is exhausted from working, and that Lan Wangji's Father has passed away.[1]
