The Qinghe Nie Clan (清河聂氏, Qīnghé Niè Shì) is one of the four great Cultivation Clans and resides in the Impure Realm, Qinghe. Its current leader is Nie Huaisang.

History[]

The founder of the Qinghe Nie Clan was a butcher.[1]

The sixth leader of the Qinghe Nie Clan came up with the idea to turn their Ancestral Hall into Stone Castles to honor the violent saber spirits of their ancestors with a number of corpses that were about to turn into fierce corpses in order to prevent bloodshed.[2]

When Nie Mingjue's father was clan leader, he was summoned to Qishan by Wen Ruohan, the leader of the Qishan Wen Clan. Wen Ruohan had been informed by an attendee with unknown motives that Qinghe had sabers that surpassed all the cultivation world, including Wen Ruohan's saber. Wen Ruohan requested that the Qinghe Nie Clan Leader show his saber, and struck the saber before returning it to the Nie Clan Leader. Several days later, during a night hunt, the Qinghe Nie Clan Leader’s saber shattered during a night hunt. He was mortally wounded by a beast, and succumbed to his injuries after six months.[3]

Despite his youth, Nie Mingjue took over as the new clan leader. He was known as a strict but principled leader, and became a prominent figure in the Sunshot Campaign to overthrow the Qishan Wen Clan for their tyranny.[4] After the war, he became part of the Venerated Triad with Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao,[5] and the Qinghe Nie Clan rose in power.[2]

Unfortunately, Nie Mingjue succumbed to sudden qi deviation, supposedly due to the unorthodox cultivation not long after the war. His younger brother Nie Huaisang took over, and was known as the "Headshaker" due to his indecision and tendency to answer questions with "I don't know."[6] The Nie Clan declined during this period.[7]

However, Nie Huaisang's ignorance is later implied to have been an act, all to avenge Nie Mingjue's murder by Jin Guangyao. In fact, Nie Huaisang's complex maneuvering directly led to Wei Wuxian's rebirth and the events of the novel.[8] According to the author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, he is now positioned to become Chief Cultivator over all the clans, presumably thus restoring the Nie Clan to a powerful position.[9]

Saber Spirit[]

While most other clans cultivate with the use of the jian, the Chinese double-edged straight sword, the Qinghe Nie Clan cultivates fierce spirits with the dao, the Chinese single-edged saber. The blade requires greater strength and a more aggressive fighting style. As a result, disciples of the Nie Clan are known for their aggression and violence in battle.[2]

The Nie Clan uses the resentful energy of beasts and creatures to cultivate their sabers, a practice that differs from Demonic Cultivation solely in that no human resentful energy is used. However, this particular method eventually begins to affect their owner's state of mind. As a result, nearly every Nie Clan Leader has eventually grown irritable and died of a qi deviation.[2]
