Madam Jin (金夫人, Jīn-fūrén) was the wife of the former leader of the Lanling Jin Clan, Jin Guangshan, and the mother of Jin Zixuan. By proxy, she is the stepmother of her husband's illegitimate children, including Qin Su, Mo Xuanyu, and Jin Guangyao. Through her son, she was the mother-in-law of Jiang Yanli and the paternal grandmother of Jin Ling.
Appearance[]
Although she is middle-aged, Madam Jin's cultivation is strong enough that she still possesses the appearance of a twenty-year-old.[1]
Her facial features are orthodox, with a hint of rigidity around the edges.[2] She typically wears an arrogant expression.[1]
Madam Jin seems valiant while flying on her sword, and elegant when she walks.[2]
Personality[]
Madam Jin is well known[3] for her strong personality and temper, to the extent that Jin Guangshan is said to fear her.[4] She loaths her husband's many affairs and any reminder thereof. Once Jin Guangyao is accepted into the Lanling Jin Clan, she frequently take the opportunity to scold or beat him instead of her husband.[2][5]
Madam Jin seems the no-nonsense type, as she appreciates Jiang Yanli's character over her cultivation and beauty. She has no patience for her son's superficial values or arrogant mannerisms, and even publicly scolds him for bullying Jiang Yanli.[2]
Madam Jin often hides her more vulnerable emotions from others. After Jin Zixuan's death, she is careful not to display her grief to Jiang Yanli, and as Wei Wuxian observes, her typically arrogant expression is nothing more than a mask once she is alone.[1]
History[]
Origins[]
As Madam Jin's clan was close with the Meishan Yu Clan, she grew up alongside Yu Ziyuan. The two women maintained their friendship after they each married leaders of the five Great Clans.[4]
Engagement of Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli[]
Madam Jin and Yu Ziyuan eventually promised each other that if both of their children were sons, they would become sworn brothers; if both were daughters, they would become sworn sisters; if one was a son and one was a daughter, then they would become husband and wife.[2]
As a result, Madam Jin's only son Jin Zixuan was betrothed to Yu Ziyuan's eldest child, Jiang Yanli. Unfortunately, Jin Zixuan does not reciprocate Jiang Yanli's affections, considering her unremarkable in both appearance and cultivation. Once Jin Zixuan declares his unhappiness to Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng while they study together at the Cloud Recesses, a brawl breaks out and ultimately, Jiang Fengmian and Jin Guangshan cancel the engagement.[4]
Night Hunt at Mount Baifeng[]
As Madam Jin had not given up on the idea of her son marrying Jiang Yanli, she insists on Jiang Yanli's presence during the night-hunt on Mount Baifeng. Later, realizing that Jiang Yanli seems upset, Madam Jin speaks gently to her. She demands to know if "that damn little brat" has bullied her again, and though Jiang Yanli denies it, Madam Jin turned to Jin Zixuan to remind him what he had promised her, and asks if he wants to die.[2]
After Jin Zixun accuses Wei Wuxian of taking too much prey, Madam Jin initially tries to persuade Jiang Yanli not to involve herself. Jiang Yanli refuses and insists that Jin Zixun apologize for insulting her sworn brother. Madam Jin immediately supports her, to her nephew's embarrassment.[6]
When Jin Guangyao and Lan Xichen arrive at the scene, Madam Jin's mood darkens once more. Madam Jin was evidently greatly displeased when Jin Guangyao was accepted into the Lanling Jin Clan following the Sunshot Campaign, and seizes the opportunity to castigate him for planning the night-hunt poorly.[6]
When Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian attempt to depart, Madam Jin reassures Jiang Yanli that she is never an inconvenience, and offers to help beat her son up for her. Jin Zixuan then blurts out his feelings for Jiang Yanli in front of everyone, before fleeing in embarrassment as his mother chases after him on her sword.[6]
Death of Jin Zixuan[]
Madam Jin is grief-stricken at her son's untimely death. She kneels for a long time before her son's coffin alongside Jiang Yanli before deciding to prepare food for her daughter-in-law.[1]
As Wei Wuxian watches, Madam Jin only shows her grief once she exits the room. Madam Jin then attempts to paste her typical arrogant expression on, only to notice Wei Wuxian's presence and immediately raise an alarm.[1]
Her relationship with Jin Guangshan deteriorates once Jin Zixuan is no longer around to mediate. Although she cannot beat her husband, she takes her anger out on Jin Guangyao,[5] leaving gashes[7] and bruises on his forehead large enough that Xue Yang assumes they are from Nie Mingjue.[5]
Death[]
Madam Jin is extremely distressed when her ailing husband still does not cease his licentious activities. Having lost her husband, son, and daughter-in-law, she struggles with depression for a few years before dying.[8]
Abilities[]
Cultivation: Madam Jin has a high cultivation level, which helps maintain her young appearance.[1]
Swordsmanship: Madam Jin flies on a sword at the Hunt on Mount Baifeng on a flying sword, indicating she is skilled with a sword.[2]
Relationships[]
Yu Ziyuan[]
Yu Ziyuan and Madam Jin were close friends from childhood, and maintain their relationship until Yu Ziyuan's death. They promised each other that if their first children were boys or girls, they would become sworn brothers or sisters, and if one was a girl while the other was a boy, they would become husband and wife.[2]
Jin Guangshan[]
Jin Guangshan is frightened of Madam Jin[3] and rarely dares to oppose his wife.[4] However, he frequently incites Madam Jin's ire by engaging in extramarital affairs. His death during an alleged orgy causes Madam Jin enough humiliation and anger that she falls into depression.[8]
Jin Zixuan[]
On the surface, Madam Jin is exceedingly harsh with her son. She frequently scolds him and threatens to beat him for his arrogant mannerisms.[2][6]
However, beneath her temper, Madam Jin deeply loves her son and is devastated by his death.[1]
Jiang Yanli[]
In contrast to her behavior with almost everyone else, Madam Jin is gentle and thoughtful to Jiang Yanli. She defends Jiang Yanli from her son's bullying,[2] supports her against her nephew Jin Zixun,[6] and, after Jin Zixuan's death, hides her grief to avoid distressing Jiang Yanli further by hiding her own grief.[1]
Jin Zixun[]
Madam Jin has no patience for her nephew's behavior, as she immediately commands him to stop his confrontation with Wei Wuxian. When that fails, Madam Jin attempts to keep Jiang Yanli from involving herself, but once Jiang Yanli confronts Jin Zixun, Madam Jin swiftly backs her at the expense of her nephew.[6]
Jin Guangyao[]
Madam Jin sees Jin Guangyao as a reminder of her husband's affairs, and thus she despises him. She criticizes him harshly,[6] and after Jin Zixuan's death, takes out her wrath towards Jin Guangshan on Jin Guangyao. She beats him extensively, leaving bruises and gashes he futilely attempts to cover.[7][5]
