Jin Zixun (金子勋, Jīn Zixūn) is a member of the Lanling Jin Clan and the cousin of Jin Zixuan.

Appearance[]

Jin Zixun has a large build, a good physique, and a darker skin complexion. He considers himself quite handsome.[1]

Personality[]

Jin Zixun is confrontational[2][1] and arrogant.[3] He is extremely proud of the status of the Lanling Jin Clan, and has a tendency to bully both those he sees as equals[3] and those he deems beneath him.[3]

Jin Zixun also seems to lack self-awareness or understanding of his behavior, as Wei Wuxian notes that Jin Zixun seems to believe he is popular.[1]

History[]

Sunshot Campaign[]

During the Sunshot Campaign, Jin Zixun often insists on defending the back due to an apparent injury.[2]

Night Hunt on Mount Baifeng[]

Jin Zixun first causes a commotion during the archery competition to enter the hunt on Mount Baifeng, as he brags loudly about his cousin Jin Zixuan's abilities.[2] After discovering that Wei Wuxian had taken a third of the prey, he leads a group of disgruntled cultivators, including Clan Leader Yao, to confront Wei Wuxian.[2]

Ignoring his aunt Madam Jin's order to stop, Jin Zixun accuses Wei Wuxian of breaking a nonexistent rule about the allotment of prey, and insulted him as the son of a servant.[2] As a result, Jiang Yanli steps in front of her martial brother and, though she first apologizes for Jin Zixun's hurt, she insists that Wei Wuxian is like a brother to her, and declares that she will not abide any insults towards him. She ends her speech with a demand for Jin Zixun's apology, which Madam Jin swiftly supports.[4]

When Jin Guangyao and Lan Xichen arrive at the scene, Jin Zixun seizes the opportunity to avoid apologizing and directs his complaints towards Jin Guangyao, who has been organizing the hunt. Although Jin Guangyao assures him that the hunting grounds will be expanded in an hour, Jin Zixun declares that he will quit. However, he does not walk far away, and is present to hear Jin Zixuan's subsequent confession of love for Jiang Yanli.[4]

Kidnapping of the Wen Remnants[]

As guests arrived at a private banquet hosted by the Lanling Jin Clan, Jin Zixun runs into Su She, who had gotten lost on the winding paths to Golden Carp Tower. Jin Zixun takes the opportunity to scold Su She, claiming that he does not deserve to walk these paths. Jin Guangyao intervenes and leads Su She in the correct direction.[3]

Once the banquet is underway, Jin Zixun begins to badger Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji to drink with them. Despite Jin Guangyao's attempts to intervene, Jin Zixun maintains that refusal would be an insult.[3]

He is interrupted by Wei Wuxian's sudden arrival. After drinking the cup meant for Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian asks Jin Zixun if they can speak. Disgruntled, Jin Zixun replies that Wei Wuxian will have to wait until the banquet ended – anytime from six to twelve hours later, or perhaps until the next day.[3]

Out of patience, Wei Wuxian then brings up the matter in public – whether Jin Zixun remembers a man by the name of Wen Ning. When Jin Zixun scoffs, Wei Wuxian provides details of a disastrous night-hunt in Ganquan the preceding month, where Jin Zixun had apparently tried to use the remnants of the Qishan Wen Clan as bait to catch a bat king. Wen Ning attempted to reason with him, but when the bat king escaped, Jin Zixun beat the Wen cultivators and took them captive. They had not been seen since.[3]

Wei Wuxian and Jin Zixun argue, with Jin Zixun refusing to reveal the Wens' location. Only when Jin Zixun oversteps by comparing the Lanling Jin Clan to the Heavens does Jin Guangshan step in. Unfortunately, Jin Guangshan seizes the opportunity to remind Wei Wuxian of the Yin Tiger Tally, and Wei Wuxian correctly points out his ambition to rule the cultivation world like the former Qishan Wen Clan.[3]

Wei Wuxian then lifts Chenqing to his lips and gives Jin Zixun to the count of three to tell him where the Wen remnants are. At Jin Guangshan's command, Jin Zixun informs him they were at Qiongqi Path. After Wei Wuxian leaves, Jin Zixun throws the rest of his liquor on Jin Guangyao before storming away.[3]

Thousand Sores and Hundred Holes Curse[]

A number of months later, Jin Zixun becomes afflicted with the Thousand Sores and Hundred Holes Curse. He confides only in his uncle, but despite hiring a number of medics and curse experts, the curse continues to progress.[1]

Jin Zixun is certain that Wei Wuxian must be behind the curse. As Wei Wuxian has been invited to Jin Ling's one-month celebration, Jin Guangshan suggests that Jin Zixun seize the opportunity to ambush Wei Wuxian and free himself of the curse. At some point, Jin Guangyao also becomes aware of their plot.[1]

While Wei Wuxian and the conscious Fierce Corpse Wen Ning walk along Qiongqi Path, over three hundred cultivators appear to ambush them. Jin Zixun shows Wei Wuxian the curse and commands him to remove it. When Wei Wuxian maintains that he had not cast the curse, Jin Zixun threatens to kill him to rid himself of the curse.[1]

Wei Wuxian attempts to summon fierce corpses with Chenqing, but Jin Zixun informs him that he has had all corpses removed from the area. Out of options, Wei Wuxian uses Wen Ning to fight the cultivators while he faces Jin Zixun.[1]

Jin Zixun mocks Wei Wuxian for not using his sword, and eventually manages to grab Wei Wuxian's present for Jin Ling. Just then, Jin Zixuan arrives, having been informed of the situation by Jin Guangyao. Although Jin Zixuan attempts to reason with both his cousin and Wei Wuxian, Jin Zixun crushes Wei Wuxian's gift, further infuriating Wei Wuxian.[1]

Wei Wuxian then loses control of his rage towards Jin Zixuan, accidentally causing Wen Ning to kill him. A horrified Jin Zixun yells for arrows to be released before Wen Ning's fingers wrap around his throat, resulting in his death by either strangulation or the breaking of his neck.[1]

Abilities & Weapons[]

  • Sword:During the ambush on Wei Wuxian, Jin Zixun displays agility with a sword as he battles Wei Wuxian's Talismans.[1]
  • Cultivation: His cultivation level is low enough that he can be affected by the Thousand Sores and Hundred Holes Curse, a fact many in the cultivation world consider embarrassing.[1]

Relationships[]

Jin Guangshan[]

Jin Zixun is the son of Jin Guangshan's brother.[5] He appears to trust his uncle, as Jin Guangshan is the only person he consults about his curse. Jin Guangshan hires many curse experts and medics, but when none can remove it, he helps his nephew form a plan to kill their prime suspect, Wei Wuxian.[1]

Madam Jin[]

Madam Jin has no patience for her nephew's behavior, as she immediately attempts to stop his confrontation with Wei Wuxian. When that fails, Madam Jin attempts to keep Jiang Yanli from involving herself, but once Jiang Yanli confronts Jin Zixun, Madam Jin swiftly backs her at the expense of her nephew, to his embarrassment.[4]

Jin Zixuan[]

Jin Zixuan and Jin Zixun grew up together and are quite close.[1] The usually arrogant Jin Zixun, in fact, lauds his cousin's archery skills instead of his own.[2]

At Qiongqi Path, Jin Zixuan demands to know why Jin Zixun had not told him about the curse as he attempts to negotiate a peaceful solution to the standoff. Once Jin Zixuan is mortally wounded, Jin Zixun screams for the archers to release their arrows, indicating he is shocked and horrified at his cousin's death.[1]

Jiang Yanli[]

Jin Zixun respects Jiang Yanli as his cousin's wife,[1]and before that, as a favorite of Madam Jin and the sister of Jiang Cheng. However, he finds her demand that he apologize to Wei Wuxian humiliating.[4]

Jin Guangyao[]

Jin Zixun is initially ashamed to belong to the same clan as Jin Guangyao, due to the latter's heritage. When embarrassed by Wei Wuxian during the Lanling Jin Clan's Banquet, Jin Zixun even takes out his anger on Jin Guangyao by throwing liquor on his robes.[3]

However, their relationship improves over the next several months. By the time of his death, Jin Zixun feels close enough to his cousin to refer to him as "A-Yao."[1]

Su She[]

Su She despises Jin Zixun for his arrogant bullying. When Lan Wangji finally notices the backlash scars from the Thousand Sores and Hundred Holes Curse on Su She thirteen years later, Su She shows no remorse, declaring "those as arrogant as him – I'll kill every one who comes my way!"[6]

Wei Wuxian[]

Wei Wuxian considers Jin Zixun arrogant and obnoxious,[6] but he does not appear to hold lasting resentment towards him. Although Jin Zixun is responsible for kidnapping the Wen remnants, Wei Wuxian dwells so little on him that he initially fails to recognize Jin Zixun during the ambush at Qiongqi Path.[1]

Animation Divergence[]

Jin Zixun's appearance is greatly altered from its description in the animation.[7] In addition, his brash, instigating behavior is replaced with cowardice during his own ambush, as he attempts to flee Wei Wuxian at Qiongqi Path.[7]

His body disappears after death to cover that the Thousand Sores and Hundred Holes Curse had not abated even after Wei Wuxian's demise. Lan Wangji evidently spent time searching for it, and after Wei Wuxian's return, they encounter Jin Zixun's head possessed by resentful energy.[7]

Web Series Divergence[]

In the web series, Jin Zixun plays a key role in strategy meetings on the front lines of the Sunshot Campaign,[8] rather than defend the back due to injury.
