Hensheng: To Hate Life - Part Eight is the one-hundred and fifth chapter of Mo Dao Zu Shi.
Synopsis []
Lan Xichen asks Jin Guangyao for an explanation, but he refuses to answer.
Wei Wuxian enters Empathy with a female Ghost. He awakens in a brothel, inhabiting the body of a prostitute named Anxin. Anxin scornfully tells a customer about Meng Shi, a literate prostitute who claims her son is from a renowned clan leader. She calls the woman's fourteen-year-old son, Meng Yao, over to mock him further for his studies in cultivation.
The brothel is soon disrupted by Meng Shi herself, who is savagely attacked by a dissatisfied customer. The man kicks Meng Yao down the stairs when he tries to intervene, and strips Meng Shi before throwing her onto the street.
Only one prostitute defends her: Sisi, the witness Jin Guangyao spared. Sisi strips off her out robe to cover Meng Shi before boldly shaming the onlookers for staring. She escorts Meng Shi inside and fetches medicine for Meng Yao. When Sisi overhears Anxin's remarks that bearing a child ruined Meng Shi's looks and that her ability to read filled her head with foolish ideas, she fights Anxin as well.
As he experiences the fire that killed Anxin, Wei Wuxian emerges from Empathy to explain that Jin Guangyao must have burned down the brothel in which he grew up.
Jin Guangyao admits to setting the fire, asking what is the difference between one crime more or one crime less. Lan Xichen then asks if he burned the place to erase his past, and Jin Guangyao says that is not entirely the reason.
Jin Guangyao asks if he will ask him the reason reason, and Lan Xichen says that Jin Guangyao has done too much. Although he used to believe that Jin Guangyao had his own reasons for his actions, he no longer knows if he can believe him.
Jin Guangyao kneels and apologizes. He says that he no longer desires the position of Chief Cultivator, and has destroyed the Yin Tiger Tally. He plans to sail for Dongying tonight, and pleads with Lan Xichen to allow him to live.
Wei Wuxian suspects he merely wants to lie low before returning. He requests to see the Yin Tiger Tally. Jin Guangyao replies that he does not have it on him, as it is merely resentful scrap metal now.
He asks for Lan Xichen to believe him, addressing him as "Er-Ge." Lan Xichen reminds him that after the Second Siege of the Burial Mounds, he told him not to call him "Er-Ge" again.
Jin Guangyao says that the Burial Mounds was a mistake, but adds that he did so because there was no way back. Despite Lan Wangji's warning not to speak with him, Lan Xichen insists on hearing what Jin Guangyao means by that.
Jin Guangyao reveals that he has received a letter.[1]
