Golden Carp Tower (金鳞台, Jīnlín Tái; lit. Golden Scale Tower; also: Jinlin Tower, Koi Tower, Carp Tower) is the Jin Clan's residence in Lanling.

Layout[]

The Lanling Jin Clan’s Koi Tower sits in the most flourishing part of Lanling City. The main road used to visit the tower is a carriage path more than half a mile in length. It only opens for important events such as banquets or the Discussion Conferences. According to the clan's rules, one must not walk at a fast pace here. Both sides of the path are covered in murals and reliefs, telling stories of the Jin Clan's leaders and other distinguished cultivators. During the journey, disciples of the clan act as guides as they drive the carriages.[1]

Following the stairs up Koi Tower is a wide, brick-paved square. To the far side of the square, an alabaster base sits over a flight of nine stairs in the ruyi style. On top of the base, a magnificent palace complete with a hip-and-gable roof overlooks an ocean of Sparks Amidst Snow flowers. Multiple paths are situated before the square.[1]

Pageantry Hall[]

The main hall for banquets.

Blooming Garden[]

A residence of Jin Guangyao, consisting of a living room and a study. Inside the study, Jin Guangyao hung Lan Xichen's paintings of the Four Seasons.[1]

Fragrant Palace[]

Jin Guangyao's bedchamber, shared with Qin Su.[1]

The Fragrant Palace is a grandiose five-ridged palace. The roof is covered in glazed, gleaming tiles, and outside the palace, there are thirty-two golden pillars carved with peonies.[1]

The inside is sumptuously ornamented, with layers and layers of gauze curtains cascading onto the ground. A beast-shaped incense burner exuded clouds of aromatic smoke.[1]

Behind the curtains, there is a bronze mirror that leads to a secret treasure vault.[1]

Treasure Vault[]

Many valuable items are hidden within the vault, including an Assassin's Dagger that once belonged to Wen Ruohan, a table perfect for cutting up bodies, a title deed to the Guanyin Temple, Wei Wuxian's old manuscripts, Suibian, and Nie Mingjue's severed head.[1][2]

History[]

In the aftermath of Jin Zixuan's death, Wen Qing and Wen Ning surrender themselves to Koi Tower in exchange for the lives of Wei Wuxian and the remnants of their clan. During their surrender, Lan Wangji attempts to speak in their defense, [3] but this is rendered null when Wen Ning loses control, killing members of the Qinghe Nie Clan[4] and the Gusu Lan Clan[5] in his rampage.[6] An interview with author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu revealed that this incident was not an accident, implying that Xue Yang may have used his Demonic Cultivation to manipulate Wen Ning.[7]

Trivia[]

  • The literal name for Golden Carp Tower is 金鳞台, which means Golden Scale Tower. However, Golden Scale (金鳞, Kinrin) is also the name of a breed of Koi, a type of carp fish.
    • However, the characters that appears in most novel chapters, save a single extra,[8] are actually 金麟台, Jīnlín Tái; lit. Golden Female Qilin Tower). In a Weibo post, author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu confirmed that this was a typo, and the correct character is "鳞."[9]
