Fairy (仙子, Xiānzǐ) is Jin Ling's spiritual dog given to him by his uncle, Jin Guangyao. When Fairy was a puppy, Jin Ling called her Little Fairy (小仙子, Xiǎo Xiānzǐ), but after she grew up her name was shortened to Fairy.[1]
Appearance[]
Fairy is described as having black fur.[2]
A Weibo post by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu revealed that Fairy is a husky.[3]
Personality[]
Fairy seems to be a playful and energetic dog who is loyal to Jin Ling above anyone else.[4] During the events of the Guanyin Temple, she displays high intelligence beyond that of a normal dog through her efforts to alert the Gusu Lan Clan that at least one of their members was in danger, consistent with her breed as a spiritual dog.[2]
History[]
Gift[]
When Jin Ling was seven years old, he became distraught after a fight with the other disciples his age. After hearing that Jin Ling was throwing a tantrum in his room, his uncle Jin Guangyao entered, only to have a vase smashed at his feet.[2]
The next day, Jin Guangyao knocked on his door with a puppy in hand, telling him that he had "found this little thing and don't know what to call it. Perhaps you could give it a name?"[2]
Stone Castles[]
In the Novel, Fairy first appears in Qinghe, accompanying Jin Ling as he attempts to investigate reports of man-eating houses. By coincidence, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji had also arrived in the area to find the Demonic Left Arm's missing body parts.[5]
After Jin Ling kicks a charlatan for mentioning Wei Wuxian's name in his presence, he calls Fairy to scare Wei Wuxian. After fleeing in fear, Wei Wuxian takes shelter behind Lan Wangji. Sensing that Lan Wangji is not someone to be trifled with, Fairy does not approach Wei Wuxian further.[5]
Fairy then plays a crucial role in rescuing Jin Ling from the stone castles, as she leads Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji to Jin Ling’s last known location.[6]
Unfortunately, not long after his rescue, Jin Ling's uncle Jiang Cheng captures Wei Wuxian. Knowing that his former sworn brother is terrified of dogs, Jiang Cheng asks Jin Ling to lend him Fairy to intimidate Wei Wuxian.[7]
Golden Carp Tower[]
During the Discussion Conference at Golden Carp Tower, Jin Chan accuses Jin Ling of relying on Fairy to win fights.[8]
Guanyin Temple[]
After Wei Wuxian departs Lotus Pier following his confrontation with Jiang Cheng, Jin Ling uses Fairy to track Wei Wuxian.[9]
Fairy runs off after Jin Ling is captured at the Guanyin Temple, prompting Jin Guangyao to order Su She to find and kill the dog lest it alert other cultivators to his presence.[4] Fortunately, Su She fails in his assignment, and Fairy leads Jiang Cheng to the Guanyin Temple. Fairy attacks Su She until Jin Ling orders the dog away for her safety.[10]
Fairy then seeks out a nearby subordinate clan of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan. The leader recognizes Fairy, and takes her to Lotus Pier. At Lotus Pier, Fairy attracts the attention of cultivators from Gusu Lan Clan by tearing off a piece of Lan Sizhui’s robes and wrapping it around her head to imitate the Lan Clan's forehead ribbon. This hints to the cultivators that members of the Gusu Lan Clan – namely Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen – are in danger, and they promptly follow Fairy back to the temple.[2]
Abilities[]
- Intelligence: As a spiritual dog, Fairy displays considerable intelligence in her efforts to save her master.[2]
- Sensing Danger: Befitting a spiritual dog, Fairy is capable of sensing danger and alerting others.[6]
Relationships[]
Jin Ling[]
Fairy often accompanies Jin Ling on night-hunts and aids efforts to save his life at least twice, at the Stone Castles[6] and at the Guanyin Temple.[2] Jin Ling, in turn, cares for her and became frightened at the prospect of her death.[4]
Wei Wuxian[]
Wei Wuxian is terrified of Fairy due to his fear of dogs.[2]
Lan Wangji[]
Fairy recognizes Lan Wangji's authority, as she eventually retreats from Wei Wuxian once Lan Wangji stands in her way.[5]
Jiang Cheng[]
Fairy seems to recognize him as an ally of Jin Ling, as she attacked the Guanyin Temple alongside Jiang Cheng until Jin Ling ordered her away for her safety.[10]
Jin Guangyao[]
Jin Guangyao originally gifted Fairy to Jin Ling when he was a child. However, as her loyalty was to Jin Ling and not himself, Jin Guangyao orders Fairy killed at the Guanyin Temple to allow his escape.[4]

Trivia[]
- Although the novel translation by Exiled Rebel Scanlations uses she/her pronouns for Fairy, other translations sometimes use he/him pronouns. The original written Chinese uses the genderless 它, tā, a common pronoun for animals.
