The ninth episode of the Web Series premiered on July 3, 2019.
Synopsis[]
Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian note the Dire Owl's presence again, and use their cultivation to form a net of Golden Threads to hold back the Puppets. Suddenly, the Puppets are lured away and to sleep by a flute played by Wen Qing.
The young masters' relief is cut short when a voice rings out, condemning them for trespassing in the Heavenly Maiden's temple. Nie Huaisang hastily apologizes, but the voice reveals itself to be Jiang Cheng pranking them.
Jiang Cheng explains that he came with Wen Qing, but as her music has stopped, the four hurry to make sure she is unharmed. She is, but her family still remain without their souls. She tells them that unless the Dire Owl is killed, her family will not regain their souls.
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji decide to kill the owl. Before departing to the forest, they use the Golden Thread Formation again to protect Wen Qing, Nie Huaisang, and Jiang Cheng.
The forest is full of a thick fog, and Wei Wuxian's Yin-Burning Talisman does little to dispel it. The Dire Owl summons chains to fight its hunters, but eventually, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji triumph over the Dire Owl.
They return to find that Wen Qing's family has regained their souls. She explains that her family is a branch of the main Qishan Wen family, and that they practice medicine. As a child, however, the Heavenly Maiden suddenly came alive and stole many souls. Her parents' souls were among those stolen, and Wen Ning's soul was nearly stolen, resulting in his unusual susceptibility to ghosts. Since then, she and Wen Ning were brought up in Nightless City by Wen Ruohan.
In Nightless City, Wen Chao complains that Wen Qing has betrayed him. Wen Ruohan, however, blames his foolish son for attempting to harm Wen Qing's family.
Back on Dafan Mountain, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji question Wen Qing. She admits that when Wen Ruohan came to investigate the Heavenly Maiden, he discovered a piece of Yin Metal in it, the reason for its soul-stealing power. She refuses to help them further and departs for Nightless City.
The four young masters then visit a tavern in Yueyang, where Wei Wuxian attempts to gain information on eerie spiritual activity to find the missing Yin Metal. A waiter explains that the Yueyang Chang Clan has vanished recently.
While Nie Huaisang sets out to fetch help from Qinghe, Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian, and Jiang Cheng approach the Yueyang Chang Clan. They find the family massacred inside, with evidence that they were turned into Puppets before death.[1]

Divergence from the Novel[]
Much of Episode 9 is original content. The scene where Wei Wuxian extracts information about the massacre of the Yueyang Chang Clan from a waiter is loosely based on a scene in the novel, although only he and Lan Wangji were present at the time, and it occurred after his resurrection into Mo Xuanyu's body.[2]
Additionally, in the novel, the massacre of the Yueyang Chang Clan occurred about a year after the death of Wei Wuxian, several years after the end of the Qishan Wen Clan's tyranny.[3]
