The fiftieth and final episode of the Web Series premiered on August 20, 2019.

Synopsis[]

Nie Huaisang insists that he saw the now-mortally wounded Jin Guangyao reach behind himself to move against Lan Xichen.

Lan Xichen cries out that he warned Jin Guangyao, but Jin Guangyao insists that he did not try anything. Everyone's suspicions begin to fall on Nie Huaisang as the one who orchestrated Jin Guangyao's downfall, though Nie Huaisang denies it.

Despite Lan Xichen's warnings for Jin Guangyao not to over, Jin Guangyao rises to his feet. Nie Huaisang insists that he saw him move against Lan Xichen, and Jin Guangyao drives the sword deeper into his own chest. He insists that, although he has told countless lies and killed many people, he has never thought of hurting Lan Xichen.

He reminds Lan Xichen of all the times he has helped him, and concludes with a scream that, just like Nie Mingjue, Lan Xichen still does not believe him worthy of life.

Suddenly, he whisks Lan Xichen over to the coffin and uses the blood from his injuries to destroy the seal. Baxia's dark energy fills the temple, and it begins to collapse.

As Jiang Cheng shouts that they must leave, Jin Guangyao asks Lan Xichen to "stay and die with me." Lan Xichen closes his eyes in resignation, and Jin Guangyao shoves him away from the coffin into Lan Wangji's arms so that he can live.

As the temple collapses, Jin Guangyao shouts that he is not afraid of Nie Mingjue.

Outside, Jin Ling sinks to his knees in tears. The distraught Lan Xichen asks Nie Huaisang repeatedly what he saw, but gets only vague responses that conclude with "I don't know."

Jiang Cheng stares at Wei Wuxian, as if he wants to speak with him. Suddenly, Fairy arrives with a posse of cultivators, including Lan Qiren, Lan Jingyi, and Ouyang Zizhen. Jiang Cheng walks away.

Nie Huaisang picks up Jin Guangyao's fallen hat. A brief flashback shows Jin Guangyao as a child. His mother Meng Shi tells him to wear a hat to identify himself as a gentleman. Back in the present, Nie Huaisang dusts the hat off, only to find blood staining his fingers.

Jin Ling tells Jiang Cheng that Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji have left with Little Apple. He asks his uncle what he wanted to say to Wei Wuxian, and Jiang Cheng denies that he wanted to say anything.

However, a flashback reveals that after the massacre of Lotus Pier, Jiang Cheng was captured not because he returned for his parents' bodies, but because he saw the Wens searching the market where Wei Wuxian had ventured to buy medicine for Jiang Yanli. Jiang Cheng threw himself in the path of the Wens to save his brother.

In the present, Jiang Cheng wishes Wei Wuxian to take care.

Lan Wangji tells Wei Wuxian that there is something he has not told him. Just then, Lan Sizhui and Wen Ning arrive, and, to Wei Wuxian's astonishment, Lan Sizhui recalls his identity as Wen Yuan. They have a tearful reunion, and Lan Wangji admits that this is what he had to tell him: he rescued Wen Yuan from the Burial Mounds, and took him to live as a member of the Gusu Lan Clan.

Lan Sizhui teases Wei Wuxian about the illicit things he taught him, and Wei Wuxian teases him about the time he called Lan Wangji his "Dad" in Yiling.

Wen Ning and Lan Sizhui declare their intent to build a cenotaph for his clan in Qishan before Lan Sizhui returns to the Cloud Recesses. Wen Ning insists that Wei Wuxian does not need to accompany them, revealing that he has finally found something he wants to do for himself.

Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian go their separate ways, but they meet by the Cloud Recesses again to duet Wangxian with Chenqing and Wangji. Wei Wuxian amidst his surprise that Lan Wangji would take over the role of Chief Cultivator, but Lan Wangji says that he has no regrets, as he will use his position to help those in need.

They encounter Nie Huaisang at the base of the Cloud Recesses, and Wei Wuxian implies that he knows what Nie Huaisang truly did. He then asks if Nie Huaisang wanted the position of Chief Cultivator, and Nie Huaisang replies that he does not. He will not shirk at what needs to be done, nor will he meddle when things are not his business.

Lan Wangji asks Wei Wuxian why he did not question him on giving Mo Xuanyu the Sacrificial Ritual, finding Sisi and Bicao, and more. Wei Wuxian says that there is no point to the questions anymore.

Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian depart each other, but they express confidence that they will meet again. Lan Wangji reflects that he already has a name for the song that they sing together, although Wei Wuxian does not know it.

As Wei Wuxian plays Wangxian on Chenqing again, he turns around to smile.[1]

Special Edition Divergence[]

The Special Edition cuts Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian's parting at the cliffs, as well as their discussion with Nie Huaisang. It ends with both in the Cloud Recesses, duetting Wangxian by the springs.[2]

Japanese Edition Divergence[]

The Japanese edition rearranges much of the original ending. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji part at the cliffs, and while Wei Wuxian plays Wangxian on Chenqing, he turns around when Lan Wangji speaks his name. They return to the Cloud Recesses and converse with Nie Huaisang before duetting Wangxian by the springs.[3]

Divergence from the Novel[]

Jin Guangyao's death differs somewhat from the novel to the Web Series. Rather than drag Lan Xichen over to the coffin, he breaks free and throws himself to the coffin alone. Lan Xichen follows, mistakenly believing that he is trying to escape, but Jin Guangyao is actually trying to open Nie Mingjue's coffin. Jin Guangyao pushes Lan Xichen away at the last second before Nie Mingjue's Fierce Corpse breaks his neck. The temple, therefore, does not collapse in the novel.[4]

Although Nie Huaisang does pick up Jin Guangyao's hat in both the novel and Web Series, there is no mention of blood on his hands in the novel.[5]

The scene with Meng Shi and Jin Guangyao is unique to the Web Series. Additionally, the Web Series cuts two several issues regarding Meng Shi: first, that the coffin initially held Meng Shi's body, and the implication that Nie Huaisang had severed her body in the same way that Jin Guangyao had severed his brother's. The Web Series also cuts the fact that the statue in the Guanyin Temple was actually the face of Meng Shi, as Jin Guangyao built the temple for people to worship his mother so that she could reincarnate into a better life.[5]

Although Jiang Cheng does reflect on the time he gave himself up for Wei Wuxian in both the novel and the Web Series, his wishes for Wei Wuxian to take care are unique to the Web Series.[5]

In the novel, Wei Wuxian immediately questions Nie Huaisang in the aftermath of the temple. They do not encounter each other later at the Cloud Recesses. In the novel, Nie Huaisang never hints that he indeed committed his crimes, as he does in the Web Series.[6][5]

Rather than part ways as they do in the Web Series, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji elope in the novel[7] and eventually settle in the Cloud Recesses, where Lan Xichen is undergoing secluded meditation.[8] This is thus cut from the Web Series.

Lan Wangji is not appointed Chief Cultivator in the novel. In fact, according to the author, the politically-minded Nie Huaisang will inherit the position.[9]
