The fourth episode of the Web Series premiered on June 28, 2019.

Synopsis[]

At the opening ceremony for their studies, Wei Wuxian befriends Nie Huaisang, who has snuck a bird into their classroom. As the various clan offer gifts to Clan Leader Lan Xichen, Nie Huaisang's gift is presented by Meng Yao.

Rumors and gossip break out in the room: Meng Yao is the son of a prostitute and Clan Leader Jin Guangshan, and thus Jin Zixuan's half-brother. Meng Yao once approached his father for approval into his clan, but was kicked down the stairs instead. Shortly after, he joined the Qinghe Nie Clan. Cognizant of the gossipers, Lan Xichen approaches Meng Yao and praises both the gift and Meng Yao's decorum.

Wen Chao arrives outside the Cloud Recesses, escorting Wen Qing and her little brother Wen Ning. When guards deny him entry due to the lack of invitation, Wen Chao retaliates by lighting one on fire, which Wen Qing swiftly extinguishes.

A tense standoff ensues once Wen Chao enters the opening ceremony, but Lan Xichen calms everyone with music from his xiao, Liebing. Later, he and Lan Qiren discuss that Wen Qing and Wen Ning likely have ulterior motives for staying at the Cloud Recesses.

Before departing, Meng Yao once more seeks out Lan Xichen to thank him.

Elsewhere, Wei Wuxian teaches Nie Huaisang to fish, only to rush away when he spots Wen Qing seemingly searching for something, though she denies it.

In the evening, Jiang Yanli prepares dinner while Jiang Cheng practices with his sword Sandu. He laments that their father favors Wei Wuxian over him, before all three siblings have dinner together.

In the classroom the next day, Wei Wuxian uses Paper Metamorphosis to tease Lan Wangji. Vexed, Lan Qiren then asks him how to exorcise the spirits of people that died with lingering resentment. When Wei Wuxian proposes a fourth method besides the proper three – using resentful energy to subdue them – the class is shocked, and Lan Qiren enraged.

Wei Wuxian is sent out of the classroom, where he encounters Wen Ning practicing archery. He is later asked to report to Lan Wangji for punishment.[1]

Divergence from the Novel[]

In the novel, the Qishan Wen Clan is not mentioned to have sent disciples to the Cloud Recesses. Wei Wuxian meets Wen Ning at an archery competition during a Discussion Conference in Nightless City,[2] and Wen Qing only after the massacre of Lotus Pier.[3]

Furthermore, in the novel, Meng Yao only joins the Qinghe Nie Clan during the Sunshot Campaign.[4] After his father's rejection, he works as a bookkeeper before the war,[5] and meet sLan Xichen while he is on the run after the burning of the Cloud Recesses.[6]

In addition, the novel's Paper Metamorphosis is a dark and dangerous technique that carries substantial risk to one's soul.[7] However, in the Web Series, it is evidently a common technique that Wei Wuxian uses to tease his peers in the classroom.
