The forty-ninth episode of the Web Series premiered on August 20, 2019.

Synopsis[]

Lan Xichen says that since Jin Guangyao schemed the Siege of the Burial Mounds, he should not call him "Er-Ge" again. Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian advise Lan Xichen not to speak with him.

Jin Guangyao explains that he received a letter threatening him that everything would be made public in a week. It told him to kill himself or wait for execution. Instead, Jin Guangyao attempted to kill the person or weaken the other clans via the Burial Mounds.

Lan Xichen retorts that if he had not done the things in the letter, this would never have happened, but Jin Guangyao insists that he had no choice. He asks if Lan Xichen truly does not believe in him, and Lan Xichen sinks to his knees beside Jin Guangyao.

On his marriage to his sister Qin Su, Jin Guangyao says that could not refuse to marry her. He loved her with all his heart, but it took a long time to satisfy Qin Cangye and Jin Guangshan. After learning the truth, he was terrified to cause a falling out and be blamed by both his father-in-law and father.

Lan Xichen asks why he bore a child, and Jin Guangyao said he was paranoid. Lan Xichen concludes that he killed Jin Rusong, and his father. He slaps him, shouting "A-Yao!" as he stands.

He then asks Jin Guangyao about Jin Zixuan, and Jin Guangyao confesses that he indeed purposefully sent him to Qiongqi Path. Su She was the second flute player to control Wen Ning into killing Jin Zixuan.

Jin Ling rushes at his uncle, screaming "Why?" over and over.

Jin Guangyao reaches out to him, but does not touch his nephew. Instead, he asks why he worked so hard, treated everyone well, yet was despised, while Jin Zixuan was arrogant and could spent his days with Jiang Yanli, yet be loved by everyone. Why could Jin Guangshan hold a banquet for Jin Zixuan and kick Meng Yao down the stairs on the same day?

He confesses that as long as if was his father's command, he would do anything. Set Wei Wuxian up, protect Xue Yang – no matter what, he would do it. Even when Mo Xuanyu was brought to Golden Carp Tower and Jin Guangyao forbidden from holding Jin Ling, he still hoped for his father's approval, until he heard Jin Guangshan speak to a prostitute beside him. The reason he refused to buy his mother's freedom was that his mother was literate, and he feared that literate women were too much trouble. When the prostitutes asked about his son, all Jin Guangshan said was "forget it."

Jin Guangyao laughs with despair, saying that everything is too late now, but he cannot help but seek pity.

He then wraps a guqin string around Jin Ling's throat, having hidden the string inside a wound in his own body. Jin Guangyao maintains that after he escapes, he will release his nephew unharmed. Jiang Cheng offers himself instead, but Jin Guangyao declines, as Jiang Cheng is injured.

Suddenly, Lan Sizhui is thrown inside the Guanyin Temple. Wen Ning approaches, possessed by the saber spirit of Nie Mingjue's Baxia. Wei Wuxian attempts to use Demonic Cultivation, but Wen Ning continues to approach.

In terror, Jin Guangyao begins to shake, and the string cuts into Jin Ling's throat. Afraid that Jin Ling will be killed by Jin Guangyao's shaking, Lan Wangji uses Bichen to sever his arm.

Su She supports Jin Guangyao as Wen Ning continues to approach. Lan Xichen duets Liebing with Lan Wangji's guqin, but as Jin Ling is stained with Jin Guangyao's blood, Baxia mistakes Jin Ling for Jin Guangyao.

Wen Ning fights against the possession, cutting his own hand to protect Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng. Eventually, he sends Baxia into a pillar instead.

Jiang Cheng tosses Chenqing to Wei Wuxian, revealing that he has kept it for all of these years. Wei Wuxian nearly succeeds in leading Baxia to the coffin, where he will seal it inside with the Yin Tiger Tally and Nie Mingjue.

Nie Huaisang screams that Su She has stabbed him, though Su She insists that he did not. Baxia flies out and impales Su She, killing him. Finally, however, Wei Wuxian manages to close the coffin and draw an array to seal the items inside.

Lan Xichen treats the frantic Nie Huaisang's injuries, giving him pain medication. He then turns to treat Jin Guangyao, warning him that if he tries anything, he will kill him. Jin Guangyao, seeming in too much pain to move, thanks him.

Lan Xichen asks Nie Huaisang for the pain medication. As he turns his back to Jin Guangyao, Nie Huaisang's eyes widen, and he screams for Lan Xichen to look out.

Without a backward glance, Lan Xichen sends Shuoyue through the chest of the shocked Jin Guangyao.[1]

Divergence from the Novel[]

Although Jin Guangyao initially explains his lack of choice in marrying Qin Su the same way to Lan Xichen in the novel as he does in the Web Series, once Lan Xichen asks why he bore a child, the truth is revealed: Qin Su was already pregnant by the time Jin Guangyao learned that she was his sister. This is cut from the Web Series.[2]

Although Lan Xichen does accuse Jin Guangyao of killing Jin Rusong in the novel, it is never confirmed in the text.[2] In the Web Series, however, he concludes that Jin Guangyao did kill Jin Rusong.

Lan Xichen never struck Jin Guangyao in the novel, though he did shout his name in a rare display of anger.[2]

On the matter of Jin Zixuan, although Jin Guangyao admits he sent Jin Zixuan to Qiongqi Path, in the novel he maintains his innocence in his brother's death. His only goal was to cause his brother trouble; he had no idea that Wei Wuxian would kill him. Su She was truly not working with him at the time, and never controlled Wen Ning. The death of Jin Zixuan, therefore, was an accident caused by Wei Wuxian.[2]

In the Web Series, Wei Wuxian initially holds Jin Ling back from Jin Guangyao; in the novel, Nie Huaisang holds him back.[2]

Lan Sizhui is not present during the confrontation in the Guanyin Temple; he arrives with Lan Jingyi and Lan Qiren in the aftermath.[3]

In the novel, Jin Guangyao loses his hand; in the Web Series, he loses his entire arm. Although he does begin to shake in both the novel and the Web Series, Jin Ling does not receive a single scratch in the novel. In the Web Series, his throat bleeds from a superficial cut.[2]

The scene with Wen Ning differs significant from the novel to the Web Series. While the Web Series has Wen Ning approached possessed by the saber spirit, the novel has the Fierce Corpse of Nie Mingjue approach, battling Wen Ning.[2]

In the novel, Jin Ling is mistaken for Jin Guangyao not because of Jin Guangyao's blood on him, but because they are from the same bloodline. As Jin Guangyao is weak and motionless, Nie Mingjue's attention is directed to Jin Ling when he leaps up to shout for his uncle to run.[4]

Rather than fight Baxia, Wen Ning, therefore, places himself in the way of Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng, taking a blow through the chest for them both.[4]

While Jiang Cheng immediately gives Wei Wuxian Chenqing in the Web Series, in the novel, Wei Wuxian is able to lure Nie Mingjue towards the coffin with a mere whistle.[4] It is only after Su She's death, with a rapidly worsening situation, that Jiang Cheng returns Chenqing to his brother.[5]

Although Su She seems flabbergasted at Nie Huaisang's injuries in the novel, he does not directly accuse Nie Huaisang of anything. The incident happened as he attempted to escape with Jin Guangyao, which is cut from the Web Series.[4] Moreover, Su She fights Nie Mingjue with an excellent move before the Fierce Corpse's fist punches through his chest; this is also omitted from the Web Series.[5]
