The forty-sixth episode of the Web Series premiered on August 14, 2019.

Synopsis[]

Clan Leader Ouyang declares that Jin Guangyao likely married Qin Su because he needed his father-in-law Qin Cangye's political support. Clan Leader Yao adds that Jin Rusong was likely mentally deficient. He suggests that Jin Guangyao murdered his own son and framed a political enemy.

Wei Wuxian asks Bicao if she was the one who met Qin Su during the Discussion Conference, which she nervously confirms. He presses further, asking why she only now came forward.

Bicao claims she only wanted Qin Su to know the truth, but came forward after Qin Su's suicide. She insinuates that Jin Guangyao killed her, but Wei Wuxian replies that Qin Su killed herself simply because she could not bear the truth. He then points out the bracelet on her arm, something fancier than a maid should have.

Nie Huaisang asks about the unknown man who pointed them here, but Clan Leader Yao insists he must be a man of justice. Wei Wuxian disagrees, noting that if Jin Guangyao is so cruel, why would he keep one woman alive?

However, the crowd does not listen. They accuse him of using Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen to gain his position, of killing Jin Guangshan's other bastards, of killing Jin Zixuan, and of protecting Xue Yang. Clan Leader Yao declares that they should besiege Golden Carp Tower, and the crowd cheers.

Wei Wuxian reflects how just yesterday, Jin Guangyao was well-respected. Clan Leader Yao asks Wei Wuxian to figure out how to deal with the Yin Tiger Tally, but Wei Wuxian leaves with Lan Wangji instead. Jiang Cheng watches the crowd with a dark expression.

Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian discuss that the one exposing Jin Guangyao's secrets must be as crafty as Jin Guangyao, though they do not have any suspects.

Wei Wuxian then takes Lan Wangji inside the ancestral hall of Lotus Pier, where they light joss sticks and bow to Jiang Fengmian, Yu Ziyuan, and Jiang Yanli.

Jiang Cheng arrives to chastise Wei Wuxian for bringing Lan Wangji into the ancestral hall. Wei Wuxian declares that they will go, but Jiang Cheng continues to scold. Wei Wuxian insists that he stop, but Jiang Cheng continues, insulting Lan Wangji.

He blames Wei Wuxian's protecting of Lan Wangji for the massacre of Lotus Pier. Enraged, Wei Wuxian moves to grab Jiang Cheng, only to remember that they are in the ancestral hall of his parents. He and Lan Wangji attempt to leave instead, but Jiang Cheng grabs Wei Wuxian.

Wei Wuxian passes out, and Lan Wangji catches him. When they walk past him, Jiang Cheng uses Zidian. Wen Ning puts himself in the way and holds forth Suibian, insisting that Jiang Cheng unsheathe it.

Jiang Cheng is shocked that he can unsheathe it, and Wen Ning reveals that the Golden Core within Jiang Cheng is none other than Wei Wuxian's. Rather than have his golden core mended by Baoshan Sanren, Wei Wuxian persuaded Wen Qing to transfer his own golden core into Jiang Cheng. And thus, he could never use a sword again. Demonic Cultivation was his only option for cultivation.

After Wen Ning provides enough details for Jiang Cheng to believe the truth, he tells Jiang Cheng that he should never have been able to rival Wei Wuxian with his original golden core. The distraught Jiang Cheng runs off in a frenzy.

Wei Wuxian remains unconscious as they drift away in a boat. Wen Ning asks Lan Wangji not to inform him that he told the truth, and he thanks Lan Wangji for both speaking up for him when he turned himself in at Golden Carp Tower and for saving Lan Sizhui, who is none other than Wen Yuan. Lan Wangji rescued him when he visited the Burial Mounds after Wei Wuxian's demise.

Lan Wangji asks if the golden core transplant hurt, and Wen Ning explains that no anesthetic could be used without risking the success of the procedure. Wei Wuxian was therefore awake as his golden core was removed from his body.

Wei Wuxian awakens, and Lan Wangji allows him to steal lotus pods to eat for just this one night.

A Talisman arrives, stating that Jin Guangyao has arrived in Yunmeng. Lan Wangji worries that Lan Xichen has been harmed by Jin Guangyao, as he has not replied to an earlier message.

Wei Wuxian recalls a land deed for Yunping City in Yunmeng inside Golden Carp Tower's treasure vault, and they decide to investigate.

They arrive the next morning, and Wei Wuxian uses a Talisman to create butterflies to distract several youths who taunt Wen Ning.[1]

Divergence from the Novel[]

In the novel, Clan Leader Yao has not heard rumors on Jin Rusong's murder; his suspicion is wholly his own.[2] Moreover, the supposed culprit did not vote against Jin Guangyao's rise to Chief Cultivator, but had lost an argument over the watchtowers.[3]

In the novel, the crowd immediately praises Clan Leader Yao for his deductions. They merely whisper among themselves in the Web Series.[3]

Additionally, while Wei Wuxian does assert that Qin Su killed herself because she learned the truth in the novel, the Web Series cuts his private reflection that she killed herself precisely because of the delight others would take in her suffering.[2]

While both the novel and Web Series have Wei Wuxian muse how just yesterday, Jin Guangyao was well-respected, the Web Series cuts his private scorn of the crowd's accusations against Jin Guangyao. This may be because many of the rumors are true in the Web Series, whereas Wei Wuxian implies their veracity is doubtful in the novel.[2]

The Web Series cuts the scene where Lan Wangji catches Wei Wuxian's fall from a tree in the novel, along with his growing romantic feelings for Lan Wangji in Lotus Pier's ancestral hall.[4] Thus, Jiang Cheng's homophobic accusations are also cut from the Web Series.[5]

During their argument, Wei Wuxian merely grabs Jiang Cheng in the Web Series; in the novel, they actually fight with Talismans and Zidian, respectively.[5]

Lan Wangji receives no notice that Jin Guangyao has entered Yunmeng; in the novel, he and Wei Wuxian merely decide to investigate Yunping City due to the land deed alone.[6] Moreover, Wei Wuxian did not observe the missing pages of Collection of Spirit Turmoil in the treasure vault.[3][6]

Rather than express worry that Jin Guangyao would hurt Lan Xichen, both Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian felt confident that Jin Guangyao would not harm Lan Xichen.[7]

Wei Wuxian used lotus seed pods to disrupt the boys taunting Wen Ning in the novel; in the Web Series, he uses a talisman.[7]
