The thirty-ninth episode of the Web Series premiered on August 7, 2019.

Synopsis[]

Wei Wuxian asks why Xue Yang killed Chang Ping so many years after the massacre, and why he chose to blind him before slicing him apart with Shuanghua instead of Jiangzai. He asks Xue Yang why he chose lingchi, the execution meant for punishment.

Despite Wei Wuxian's insinuation that he intended to execute revenge for Xiao Xingchen's sake, Xue Yang continues to insist that he killed Chang Ping out of hatred for the Yueyang Chang Clan. Wen Ning then saves Wei Wuxian from two Skull-Piercing Nails thrown his way.

Xue Yang falls silent, and Wei Wuxian frets that Xue Yang seems to have an extremely high pain tolerance, enabling him to last longer than most. Just then, A-Qing begins tapping her bamboo pole to indicate Xue Yang's location.

Wei Wuxian instructs Lan Wangji to strike where the bamboo pole taps. As Lan Wangji wounds him, Xue Yang kills A-Qing with Jiangzai.

Lan Wangji heavily injures Xue Yang, who finally collapses, weakened from blood loss,.

Just then, the Masked Man arrives and steals the Yin Tiger Tally from Xue Yang before vanishing. Lan Wangji notes that the man uses a sword skill from the Lanling Jin Clan.

The juniors arrive and surround the laughing Xue Yang with swords, but Wei Wuxian says to leave him to Song Lan while he carries A-Qing's body away.

Song Lan approaches Xue Yang and stabs him in the chest with Fuxue. As he lies dying, Xue Yang recalls how Xiao Xingchen confronted him.

In the flashback, Xue Yang reveals that as a child, Chang Ci'an, the father of Chang Ping, once lashed his face and ran him over story with his cart, one finger at a time, causing him to lose his little finger.

He accuses Xiao Xingchen of not feeling his pain, but Xiao Xingchen asks why his little finger was worth so many lives, why he hurt Song Lan and massacred Baixue Temple. In response, Xue Yang asks why he stopped him. He declares that he hates people who think they made the world a better place by one good deed, and warns Xiao Xingchen that he should have listened to Baoshan Sanren and never left the mountain.

Xiao Xingchen calls Xue Yang "too disgusting," and at those words, Wei Wuxian recognizes killing intent finally reemerge on Xue Yang's face.

Xue Yang replies that Xiao Xingchen is not in a position to be disgusted by him. He reveals how he tricked Xiao Xingchen into killing living people, as Shuanghua could not discern between Puppets and those suffering from Corpse Poisoning, so long as he first cut out the victims' tongues.

Xiao Xingchen begins to lose his composure, refusing to believe Xue Yang. However, Xue Yang challenges him to pass swords with the one standing behind him.

Song Lan's Puppet stands behind him, and when their swords meet, Xiao Xingchen instantly recognizes him. Xue Yang reveals that the Puppet he killed yesterday was none other than his best friend.

Devastated, Xiao Xingchen wails and falls at Song Lan's feet, as Xue Yang mocks that he cannot even save himself, let alone the world.

Suddenly, Xiao Xingchen grabs Shuanghua and slices his own throat. Xue Yang falls silent.

Xue Yang cleans Xiao Xingchen's body and places it in an array. He cleans the house and arranges their fruits and vegetables he bought earlier, expecting Xiao Xingchen to return as a corpse. He considers eating the last piece of candy Xiao Xingchen bought him, but saves it instead.

Xiao Xingchen, however, never arises. His soul shattered, and despite Xue Yang's frenzied threats against A-Qing and Yi City should Xiao Xingchen not arise, he does not return. Xue Yang can only collect the fragments of his soul in a Spirit-Trapping Bag.

As he lays bleeding in the dirt, Xue Yang recalls how Xiao Xingchen gave him candy every day, which was all he wanted as a child. He holds the last piece of candy given to him by Xiao Xingchen as he passes.

After burying A-Qing, Wei Wuxian informs the juniors what he observed in Empathy, to the juniors' tears. Jin Ling even declares that he wishes to command Fairy to bite Xue Yang.

They find Song Lan standing besides Xiao Xingchen's coffin. Wei Wuxian gives him the Spirit-Trapping Bag, and Lan Wangji gives him Shuanghua. By writing on the ground, Song Lan declares his intent to incinerate his friend's corpse, then roam the world while nurturing his soul.

After Song Lan leaves, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji discover a Suppressing Circle beneath Xiao Xingchen's coffin. In the coffin is Nie Mingjue's body and the Saber Spirit of Baxia.

In Tanzhou, Lan Sizhui finds himself drawn to toys of butterflies – the same toys that Wen Yuan once played with.

The juniors are sent into an inn while Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian consult with Lan Xichen. Lan Xichen insists that Jin Guangyao cannot be the Masked Man as he has shown no signs of cultivating a Transportation Talisman. He admits that he knows Jin Guangyao is the obvious suspect, but maintains that he trusts his closest friend is not this sort of person.

Wei Wuxian admits that he too does not dislike Jin Guangyao, but they are interrupted by an apparent argument amongst the juniors.

Lan Sizhui had apparently suggested that Wei Wuxian may not have meant Demonic Cultivation for evil, incensing Jin Ling. Lan Wangji leaves, and Lan Xichen guesses the masked Wei Wuxian's identity.

He tells him not to take the juniors' words to heart, and in return, Wei Wuxian asks him to consider the evidence carefully. He follows Lan Wangji, leaving Lan Xichen staring after him.[1]

Divergence from the Novel[]

Episode 39 contains many divergences from the novel.

In the novel, A-Qing is already a ghost, so she cannot be killed with Jiangzai. Instead, Xue Yang uses a Ghost-Destroying Talisman to destroy her soul, and Wei Wuxian used a Spirit-Trapping Bag to salvage it. In the end, Song Lan takes both her and Xiao Xingchen's fractured souls with him.[2]

Although the juniors still hold a funeral for her, there is no body to bury. They merely burn paper money, leading to an encounter with a hunter that confirms that someone led the juniors to Yi City deliberately.[2]

In the novel, Wei Wuxian orders Wen Ning to hide before the juniors see him; in the Web Series, even Jin Ling accepts his presence at A-Qing's funeral.[2]

The Masked Man does not steal with Yin Tiger Tally; rather, he uses a Transportation Talisman to remove the dying Xue Yang, who likely carries the tally on his body. Song Lan, therefore, does not kill Xue Yang in the novel, as Xue Yang is already mortally wounded by Lan Wangji.[2]

In the novel, Wei Wuxian witnesses the death of Xiao Xingchen via Empathy with A-Qing; in the Web Series, it is told through flashback.[3]

Rather than simply declare his hatred of those who think they can make the world a better place, Xue Yang also mocks how Chang Ping first cried tears of gratitude, only to later beg Xiao Xingchen not to help him; this is cut from the Web Series.[3]

Additionally, the Web Series mentions that Xiao Xingchen's killing of living people is recent; in the novel, Xue Yang had eventually stopped killing living people while he lived with Xiao Xingchen. The only exception is the killing of Song Lan.[3]

Wei Wuxian witnesses Xue Yang's severed hand clutching the last piece of candy given to him by Xiao Xingchen, rather than Xue Yang watching it as he dies.[2]

There is no discovery of Nie Mingjue's body in Yi City; rather, Lan Wangji discovers his severed right arm, completing all of the pieces except his head.[2]

In the novel, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji do not meet Lan Xichen at an inn in Tanzhou. Their night at the inn was before they journeyed to Tanzhou, and the source of Lan Wangji's second drunken adventure.[4]

The scene with Lan Sizhui's admiration of butterfly toys is unique to the Web Series.

Finally, the pieces of Nie Mingjue's fierce corpse then put themselves together in Tanzhou. Despite his missing head, his movements are characteristic enough for Wei Wuxian and Lan Xichen to recognize the corpse as Nie Mingjue. At the time, Lan Xichen is also unaware of Wei Wuxian's true identity.[5]
