The twenty-third episode of the Web Series premiered on July 22, 2019.

Synopsis[]

Wen Ruohan storms outside to confront Wei Wuxian. He asks how he controls the Yin Metal, but Wei Wuxian replies merrily that he calls it the Yin Tiger Tally rather than Yin Metal. Wen Ruohan uses his cultivation to pull Wei Wuxian to himself. As he attempts to strangle Wei Wuxian, Meng Yao stabs Wen Ruohan from behind, killing him and winning the war.

Inside the palace, Nie Mingjue awakens and attempts to kill Meng Yao. Lan Xichen intervenes, explaining that Meng Yao was the one who saved his life and the spy who gave them the map.

Wei Wuxian awakens several days later with Jiang Yanli by his bedside. She explains that Lan Wangji has been playing his guqin for him for days. When Lan Wangji arrives, they discuss his Demonic Cultivation before hearing the screams of Qishan Wen Clan remnants as they are killed.

Nie Mingjue, Lan Xichen, and Jin Guangshan discuss what to do with the Wen captives. Lan Xichen convinces Nie Mingjue that the old, weak, and innocent captives should be spared. Jin Guangshan takes the chance to introduce them to his now-acknowledged son: Meng Yao, renamed Jin Guangyao.

Jin Guangyao suggests putting the captives to work at Qiongqi Path, an idea to which all the clan leaders agree. Before leaving, however, Jin Guangshan gives his son a pointed look.

Nie Mingjue leaves without another word, continuing to treat Jin Guangyao coldly. Lan Xichen explains that Nie Mingjue believes Jin Guangyao to have made wrong choices, but reassures him that he is not evil. Once he is left alone with the Wen captives, however, Jin Guangyao orders their execution.

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji save a woman and her child from death at the hands of Jin Zixun. Under the orders of Jin Guangshan, all the Wens are apparently to be killed, out of concern that they will find and use the missing piece of Yin Metal stolen by Xue Yang.

Nie Mingjue, Lan Xichen, and Jin Guangyao swear a vow of brotherhood together, becoming the Venerated Triad.

The Lanling Jin Clan hosts a banquet to celebrate the end of the war, during which Jin Guangshan suggests reforming the engagement between Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli. As Jiang Cheng hesitates, weighing politics with his sister's feelings for Jin Zixuan, Wei Wuxian interrupts.[1]

Divergence from the Novel[]

While the Yin Tiger Tally is the name of a device Wei Wuxian forged from the sword inside the Xuanwu of Slaughter, he only uses it once during the Campaign, and it is not during a battle at Nightless City.[2]

The death of Wen Ruohan is significantly different in the novel, which portrays no battle in Nightless City. Rather, Nie Mingjue is captured along with a few other cultivators and taken to the Sun Palace, where he encounters his former deputy Meng Yao as Wen Ruohan's servant. A fight ensues, and when Wen Ruohan overwhelmingly defeats Nie Mingjue, Meng Yao kills him and escapes Nightless City with the heavily injured Nie Mingjue. Lan Xichen intervenes shortly thereafter to convince the furious Nie Mingjue that Meng Yao truly had been a spy.[3]

The depiction of Jin Guangshan as hiding at Golden Carp Tower while his son fought is different from the novel, where Jin Guangshan leads the battlefield at the Langya Front.[4]

The swearing of the oaths of the Venerated Triad does not include Nie Mingjue's warning to Jin Guangyao of facing "a thousand accusing fingers" and being "torn from limb from limb" should there be treason between them. The Web Series also omits Nie Mingjue's reason for swearing his oath – his desire to discipline Jin Guangyao like a little brother.[5]

The remnants of the Qishan Wen Clan are not captured and secretly executed by the Lanling Jin Clan. Instead, they are herded into a small territory, upon which many are oppressed and later forced into labor by the Lanling Jin Clan.[2] Moreover, while Lan Xichen does argue in favor of Wen Qing's character, Nie Mingjue does not agree to show mercy on any of the Wens. In fact, he insists that anyone who did not oppose Wen Ruohan was guilty.[6]

Although the Lanling Jin Clan does host the Flower Banquet in the aftermath of the war, it is held at Golden Carp Tower, and Jin Guangshan never suggests reforming the engagement between Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli.[3] As a matter of fact, Jin Guangshan does not think the match politically advantageous.[7]

Jin Guangyao does not get rid of his soft sword Hensheng, nor does he discover any evil within it.[5]
