Empathy (共情, Gòngqíng) is a technique that allows a cultivator to experience the past memories of a Ghost or Fierce Corpse.

Description

Empathy involves channeling a spirit to see their past memories. Memories are shared exactly as experienced, with an emphasis on emotional state and feeling.

Empathy is considered to be extremely dangerous, with a high risk of insanity and complete bodily possession. Thus, the caster using Empathy requires a supervisor to preside over the ritual, equipped with a code to pull them out of the trance if evidence of possession occurs.

Use

Wei Wuxian uses Empathy to learn what A-Qing's Ghost knows about Xue Yang, Xiao Xingchen, and the mysterious events in Yi City. For his personal code, he selects the Clarity Bell of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan, and appoints Lan Sizhui as his supervisor.

Later, Wei Wuxian's Paperman is pulled into Empathy by the sheer power of the resentful energy contained in Nie Mingjue's severed head. Even though Lan Wangji is away from his spirit, he still serves as his supervisor this time, calling his name until Wei Wuxian awakens.

In the Guanyin Temple, Wei Wuxian uses Empathy a third time to learn why the ghost of Anxin resents Jin Guangyao. Lan Wangji once again serves as his supervisor.

Web Series Divergence

In the web series, Wei Wuxian can use Empathy with people while they are still alive, such as A-Qing.
