A Curse Mark (恶诅痕, Èzǔ Hén) is a marking that an evil being cast on its target in retaliation for being offended or disturbed.[1]

Description[]

The curse mark appears as a bruise on the victim's body, and is also described to resemble a shadow.[1]

Once a person is inflicted with a Curse Mark, it will remain on them until the evil being responsible for creating the mark is appeased. If the being remains unappeased, the victim suffers the consequences, which can range from losing the limb that carries the mark to outright death.[1]

Use[]

After rescuing Jin Ling from the Stone Castles, Wei Wuxian finds a curse mark on Jin Ling's leg.[1] Unable to remove it naturally, Wei Wuxian decides to transfer the curse mark onto himself.[2]

That night, the Demonic Left Arm reacts violently to the mark on Wei Wuxian's leg, leading both Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji to surmise that the legs of the arm's body might have been buried within the Stone Castles.[3] Indeed, the curse mark begins to fade after Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji find the legs, but Wei Wuxian notes that it will not completely fade until they find the rest of the missing limbs.[4] The curse mark finally disappears after Wei Wuxian finds the dismembered head of Nie Mingjue in Golden Carp Tower.[5]

Animation Divergence[]

The curse mark has significantly more effects in the Animation than the Novel. After transferring the mark from Jin Ling, Wei Wuxian suffers nightmares of his past demise and eventually collapses from its power. Lan Wangji eventually finds him and suppresses the mark.[6]
