Collection of Spirit Turmoil (亂魄抄, Luàn Pò Chāo) is a book of songs found in the Room of Forbidden Books below the Gusu Lan Clan’s Library Pavilion.

Description

According to legend, it was written by a cultivator from the Gusu Lan Clan who journeyed to Dongying (Japan). In the hands of a skilled cultivator, the songs in Collection of Spirit Turmoil are able to take a life in seven notes. The songs in Collection of Spirit Turmoil are also able to cause illness and disturb the mind.

Use

During an Empathy session with Nie Mingjue, Wei Wuxian discovers that a section from Collection of Spirit Turmoil was mixed in with the Cleansing song that Jin Guangyao played to Nie Mingjue before his death. Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji initially assume that Wei Wuxian had played the difficult Cleansing incorrectly, but he insists that he is repeating exactly what he had heard.

Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen find a missing page in Collection of Spirit Turmoil, which they suspect to contain the incorrect portion of Cleansing. Although Jin Guangyao has a photographic memory, he likely removed the page so that no one could prove the notes he played were the same as those in Collection of Spirit Turmoil. Wei Wuxian suspects that Jin Guangyao was able to access Collection of Spirit Turmoil because he had free rein to enter the Cloud Recesses, and he had experience as a successful spy during the Sunshot Campaign.

Trivia

• The original translation by Exiled Rebel Scanlations omitted 'spirit' to simply call the book "Collection of Turmoil."
• The spirit mentioned in the title is a specific type in Chinese philosophy – the po soul that remains with the body after death.
